“That’s what I told her,“ he says. “Still, it can’t be nice–and something happened in there. She’s not doing too well.“
“So maybe we move her exorcism to today,“ I tell him. “If she’s that worried and you feel like you’re being affected, then it might be in her best interest to expedite things.“
His jaw hardens. “What if it backfires?“
“What do you mean? Like she gets more possessed?“ I ask, sitting on the bed.
He rolls his eyes. “No. I don’t know if she is possessed,“ he says. “I don’t know if I believe in possession. You know this.“
“Weird for an exorcist.“
He shakes his head, sitting next to me and raking his fingers through his hair. “I’m not an exorcist. I’m a doctor. That’s why you pay me.“
“Yeah, but you’ve never seemed this resistant to the idea before,“ I tell him. “I understand that you don’t necessarily think it’s real or you might think it’s hysteria or whatever, but I’ve never seen you this worried about it before.“
He waits a few seconds to answer me as he considers this. “Well, I wasn’t as personally invested in any of those subjects as I am in Trine. And I don’t know, I knew it was contagious in theory, but it never got to me before. I assumed it never would.“
“Right,“ I say. “When we first started this, I told you it was dangerous.“
“Yes, I know. And I’m aware you probably meant it in a metaphysical sense where I took it quite literally. I’ve seen a lot of shit since I’ve been working with you I can’t really explain and it doesn’t sit well with me, but I’ve had dreams about it before.“
“Yeah, well, you never expected to be into any of the clients, so…“
He rubs his legs as he sits forward. “Am I that transparent?“
I resist the urge to laugh. I don’t think we should ignore the threesome, but I know him well enough to know that he won’t bring it up and I’m going to be the one who’s going to have to talk to him about it. After my conversation with Salinas, I know I need to talk to Woods about it, but I also know that he’s barely keeping it together and I don’t know if this is going to push him over the edge.
Exorcisms are weird, but Father Salinas having sex with one of the subjects? Someone Rei likes? That’s even weirder.
Plus, maybe it should be the priest himself who talks to him. I don’t see why I’d have to reveal his secrets. Keeping it from him feels dishonest, though, so I think I might tell him that Luke needs to talk to him.
I open my mouth to do just that when I hear footsteps approaching me, and I immediately pick up my head to see Trine walking toward us. She has a white towel wrapped around her body, her long hair tumbling down to her collarbones. Her gaze flits between us, her brown eyes wide and dark as it does.
“Hi,“ she says to me, then turns to look at Woods. “I didn’t realize you’d have company.“
“I can leave,“ I say, standing to get up.
She shakes her head, a smile on her face. “Now, why would you do that?“
TRINE
Ishould probably be angry Misha is here at all.
I don’t have any clothes except for the ones on the bed. I know Rei said he’d go get me some clothes, but it seems like all he did was go next door to get his friend, and I’m in a towel in a hotel room I’ve never been to.
But I’m not upset. I’m exhausted. The shower helped a little, but I still feel weird as fuck, and it’s hard to think when these two men are here just staring at me.
I need normal. This is definitelynotnormal.
“Hey,“ Rei says. “Come here.“
I do as he tells me, walking over to him. It’s only a few steps, but I can feel Misha’s gaze on me as I walk. Rei stretches out his arm, his hand on my waist and pulls me close to him as he does. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you I was going to get him before I did,“ he says. “I just thought he might be able to help.“
“Help with what?“ I ask.
He laughs. I’m about to tell him I wasn’t joking when he pulls me close to him, his face tilted up so he can look into my eyes. I realize I’m exposed and he could easily undo the wrapped towel from around my chest. “With your exorcism,“ he says.
“Shouldn’t you get the priest for that?“ I ask.
