Her breath caught in her throat. He nudged her legs wider and positioned himself between them.

“Sam…” It was a half-gasp, half-cry. “Oh, my god.”

He used his fingers and mouth to open her up, penetrating her in a way that had her squirming and moaning loudly. Her response spiked his lust again.

She fisted her hand in his hair and bucked her hips upward. He took her right to the brink and let her ease back down several times before a precise stroke of his fingers sent her over the edge.

As she was still shuddering, he rolled on another condom and surged into her with one thrust. She wrapped herself around him, matching his movements and clinging to him with such eagerness and trust that he experienced an intense rush of possessiveness.

Mine.

The thought dissolved into mind-numbing pleasure and a release that left them both gasping for breath.

They fell back against the pillows again to recover. Brooke nestled up against him. He threaded his hand into her hair and absorbed the feeling of her in his arms.

Life’s greatest joy.

We should fall in love with being in love.

Do you really believe that love is a lie?

In his experience, it was. People who professed love, then hurt and cheated on each other sure as hell hadn’t been telling the truth.

As a kid, he’d been quick to paint people with the same brush—his peers, his teachers, the press, his parents’ friends. His years of traveling had changed his perceptions, but it hadn’t changed his belief that marriage was for other people.Lovewas an empty word. Romance was fiction.

Inhisworld.

He’d seen it in others, though. He hadn’t acknowledged it, hadn’t given it a name, but…yeah. He’d sensed love between spouses, couples, lovers. Women had said the words to him. But he’d always felt as if he were behind a wall where the actual physical feeling of love didn’t reach him. He lived on one side, and people like Brooke lived on the other.

He’d experienced everything else tenfold—desire, lust, affection, caring. But he’d always stopped short, blocked by the wall, when love, with all its weaknesses and vulnerability, loomed. He’d never thought much about what would happen if the wall crumbled.

But in that moment, he did.
