She paused and gave him a stern look. “The other ghosts aren’t part ofHex or Hoax?though, so you’re not allowed to go aroundexplainingthem.”

“Feed me more of this cake, and I won’t.” He polished off the last bite and scraped up the crumbs and frosting.

“You don’t have to blackmail me for more cake, Adam.” Bee started toward the door, throwing him a glance of both warmth and amusement. “All you have to do is ask. I’ll be down in the archives if you need me.”

She walked out of the room, leaving behind the scent of vanilla and cinnamon. Adam put the container down and reached for a napkin.

He thought he’d seen and heard it all. Every weird outlandish theory and belief, from cursed statues to swamp monsters and enough ghosts to populate a thousand graveyards. But not until now had he ever felt like he was entering unknown territory.

He didn’t know how to explain this effect Bee was having on him—the enjoyment he had in just feeling whatever he was feeling, the anticipation of seeing her again, his apparent growing need for her—also without explanation.

More than just lusting after her, he wanted to know all of her thought processes, her ideas, her secrets.

He almost wanted her to convince him that ghosts really did exist.
