“Don’t think this is your fault,” Bug said as we sat on my bed after dinner. Chum had spent the afternoon with me in the music room where I’d let all my worries and guilt flow out of me while he listened to my flute playing.

Everyone had had to fight for me that night, which I hated. I was the reason Charlie had come here.

“It’s hard not to, Baal sent Charlie after me. Everyone else could’ve gotten hurt,” I said with a heavy sigh.

“But they didn’t, did they? There is no way this could’ve been avoided. You’re a demonic, therefore you would’ve come to an academy anyway on your eighteenth birthday. Everwood is the closest, so here you are. You can’t help that Baal is after you. That’s just the way it is. You can’t change who your father is,” Bug said as he offered me a sad smile.

I knew he was right. There was nothing I could do to change the past. It had been inevitable, there was no way I could’ve avoided coming here. I was a demonic after all.

At least none of the other students seemed to blame me. They’d just accepted it in their stride, which blew my mind.

And Hadley had said we were like a family. We were all we had now, and this was our home.

I smiled as I thought back on her words. Family.

After she had said that, everyone had hugged me.

I really did feel like I belonged.

So, I’d do my best to protect them, whatever else came our way.

“You’re right, and I know that, it’s just hard to accept. I’d never forgive myself if any of you guys got hurt because of me,” I said with a sad smile.

“You’re really underestimating everyone else here,” Bug said as he touched my arm gently. “I’ve been here for years, and I’ve seen how well they can all fight. Trust me when I say they can defend themselves.”

I smiled, knowing he was right. I’d seen them in the combat classes and practicing their various demonic powers.

But angelics were a whole other ball game. Wayne, Paris, and all the guys, apart from my hellhounds, stood no chance without some angelic weapons.

“Just relax, Dezikiel will be back soon, and he’ll handle this,” Bug reassured me.

How though? If there was corruption in the High Council, how was he going to deal with that? If what Hadley said was true, he was a fallen angel.

What I knew of fallen angels were that they were seen as being below angels in Heaven, considered on par with demonics. He’d have little sway with the High Council.

I pursed my lips. This went above and beyond anything I could hope to handle.

“Do you want to watch a show?” Bug asked. “Keep your mind off of everything?”

“Nah, I’m actually rather tired,” I mumbled. I was mentally drained too. I hated how I had no idea on what to do. Bug wanted me to have faith in Dezikiel, but that was hard. But what else could I really do?

Bug nodded as he reached for his book on the bedside table, and I snuggled up beneath the covers, facing him with one hand on his hip.

He smiled down at me and stroked my hair tenderly as he opened his book.

“Will you cuddle me?” I asked softly. I really could use the comfort of his arms around me, to make me feel safe against the world.

He nodded with a small smile and put his book back before he slipped under the covers with me.

I rolled over and relaxed as he spooned me, his warm body pressed up against mine.

God, why were my hellhounds so warm? They were like my own personal heat packs, which I adored.

He kissed the back of my head as he tightened his arms around me.

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as a ripple of heat coursed through me at his body against mine. Despite everything that was going on, I was still reacting to him.
