“Is it because I’m the daughter of a Prince of Hell? Because of the power I have?” I asked as I fisted my hands in frustration. I just wanted to know what the hell was going on, and why the hell was I so important?

“We believe so, although we’re not entirely sure if that’s the only reason,” Miss Sage said honestly, giving me a frown as her jaw set.

“Can I just jump in and say that Jack and Creeper are back,” Hadley said quickly as she looked to the door.

Miss Sage thanked her, and only a moment later did the pair burst through the dining hall doors, looking like they’d been racing here as fire burned in their eyes.

“What the hell is going on?” Jack demanded as he strode over with a scowl, his gaze fixated on me.

“We felt your fear, and panic,” Creeper added as he joined us, his dark eyes scanning me for any sign of injury, the fire dying down in them when he realized I was okay.

“The Academy was attacked by part angelic creatures, much like Charlie’s monster,” Miss Sage explained before I could say anything.

“We should have been here,” Jack growled as the hellfire flickered in his eyes. The nerve along his jaw was jumping as he gritted his teeth, and I stepped forward to touch his arm reassuringly.

“I’m okay. Bug and Chum fought well,” I murmured to relieve him.

His dark gaze flicked from me to the pair of hellhounds, and he nodded gratefully before focusing back on me.

I managed a small smile as he let out a heavy sigh and stepped closer, wrapping one arm around my waist.

“I had to send you boys out, as there’s been a lot of demon activity in the area. There were no Everwood hunters who could get here quick enough,” Miss Sage said apologetically as Mr. Baron stepped forward.

“Hershel, can you send out a scouting crow or something to check the surrounding areas. Losing all of our keepers and then this attack has me quite worried,” he said earnestly as he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose.

Hershel nodded as he hurried back out, leaving the rest of us standing awkwardly.

“Thank you, Paris and Wayne, for finding the daggers. I’m sorry we had to send you out on such a tedious mission, but we needed angelic weapons. Dezikiel was able to locate those thanks to his contacts before he got jumped, just a shame that they were being guarded by demons,” Miss Sage said gratefully to the twins.

“They were quite easy to deal with actually, I’m just glad we got back in time,” Wayne said as he folded his arms. My eyes flicked to where his pistol was in his holster, all clipped up once more.

“Those bullets seem to work quite well on them too,” Miss Sage noted as she arched an eyebrow at his pistol.

“They actually had quite the arsenal of angelic weapons. Bolts, arrows, daggers, even another sword. And quite a few boxes of ammo too, thank God,” Wayne said as he patted his pistol.

“I think it’s time to take the lock off the gun cage, they sure would have come in handy. Maybe not to kill, but at least it would’ve slowed them down a bit,” Mr. Baron suggested.

“Pretty sure that was what I suggested already,” Wayne grumbled, and Paris gave his arm a whack as she shushed him.

Hershel returned quite quickly, kneading his fingers together anxiously. His eyes had gone black as he manipulated a bird or something to patrol the area.

“So, what do we do now?” Hadley asked the question we were all thinking.

“With Dezikiel gone, we will have to contact our own men on the inside. But we also don’t know who has been compromised yet. Clearly the Academy is no longer safe. With the wardings now down, and only witch wardings in place, we can’t keep any demonics or angelics out,” Miss Sage said as she massaged her temple in frustration.

“We’ll have to go to the safe house for now while we figure out what our next step will be,” Mr. Baron stated.

“If they’re after Lily, what are we supposed to do? Won’t they just keep coming after her?” Dylan asked, a worried frown marring his expression.

“That’s more than likely, but we won’t sacrifice one of our own. Lily has done nothing wrong,” Miss Sage stated.

“Are you suggesting we just hand her over, huh, Dylan?” Hadley snapped.

“Definitely not, but I’m just worried about the rest of us. We’re all putting our lives on the line for Lily,” Dylan said quickly in defense as he threw his hands up.

“If I’m really the problem here, perhaps I need to venture out on my own. I don’t want to put you guys at risk,” I spoke up, understanding his concern.

If this was all for me, there was no need to drag all the others down with me. Not that I wanted to be on my own, but I had no idea what else to do.
