I got out my side and leaned over the car, wanting to buy him a little more time to get himself under control before Diane peeked back in.

“Any news from Dylan?” I asked quickly as Diane watched Hadley pull up in the other car.

She fished her phone out of her pocket and sighed as she shook her head.

“Nothing.”

My stomach dropped as Jack pulled me into his side.

“They’ll be fine,” he tried to reassure me, but I knew none of us knew for sure. How could we? We had no other way of contacting them, and Miss Sage had confirmed Mr. Baron would’ve made them toss their phones too.

For all we knew, they’d been taken down by angels.

“Hadley, will you come with me so we can get some rooms sorted?” Miss Sage broke the silence as we all stood between the two cars.

My hellhounds had moved in when I’d started to shiver, shielding me from the cool night breeze with their bodies. Diane was rubbing her arms, and Xander hesitated beside her, almost like he wanted to wrap an arm around her. Instead, he took off his jacket and offered it to her, which I thought was adorable.

Too bad none of my hellhounds had jackets. Hell, only Wayne, Paris, Hadley, and Xander wore jackets.

“Should we get more clothes sorted too?” Paris asked as Miss Sage and Hadley walked off.

“Yes, that’d be a good idea, jackets for those who need them,” Miss Sage nodded back at her. “I’m sure you and Wayne can handle that?”

Paris nodded, and the twins slipped away into the shadows.

“What are the chances they’ll steal stuff?” Diane snorted as she pulled Xander’s jacket tighter around her shoulders.

“Considering we’re on the run, I don’t think it’s something we should worry about,” I muttered as I leaned into Jack for warmth.

“Do you think they’ll have enough rooms?” Chum asked as he eyed the handful of cars around us. The parking lot was empty and quiet save for us.

“Easily,” Diane said.

“Why’s Hadley going with Miss Sage?” I asked softly.

“To make sure they forget we were ever here. Hadley will use a spell so that there’s no paper trail left, and Miss Sage will pay with cash,” Diane explained.

Right, that made sense. I’d warded us from angel tracking, but they could resort to standard ways of tracing us.

“Do you think the others are okay?” I asked quietly, and Diane pursed her lips.

“Well, I could check I guess…” She said hesitantly.

“How?” I frowned at her, but then it dawned on me. She was a witch, she surely had a way to communicate with them magically, right?

“I could do a spell, but it would drain me, and we don’t know what’s in store for us ahead. I may need to be at the top of my game,” she explained as she instinctively stepped closer to Xander as a breeze swept through. He noticed this but didn’t move away.

“Is there any way to do one without draining yourself?” I asked, although I knew it was probably stupid.

“I could siphon power from someone else,” she said as she scrunched up her nose thoughtfully.

“What about me? I’m not exactly all that helpful as a fighter or anything anyway, so draining me won’t be an issue really,” Xander suggested.

“Could that work?” Bug asked as Diane gave Xander an odd look.

“Well, yeah, I guess, but are you sure? It could drain you a fair bit,” she said gently as she touched his arm.

“I’ll be fine. I can still shoot a gun if I need to,” he said with a shrug.
