Isat with my men at the table, laughing and chatting with all the other students, as if nothing had really changed. They’d welcomed me back and taken turns hugging me, then they’d expressed their gratitude and awe at my great feat to my dismay. Thankfully, Chum had come to my rescue with lavish meals for us all with the Keepers, and we settled in. Things fell back into normalcy, although I did inform them more about Thomas and his Heaven, which eased them all. Matthew and Flynn looked a little upset by it, but they were ultimately happy that he was happy.

I enjoyed the roast chicken more than I thought I would, likely thanks to not having eaten for a week.

“We were starting to get worried you wouldn’t wake up,” Wayne said after swallowing a hefty mouthful of roast veggies.

“Dezikiel was sure you’d wake up. Apparently, your angel grace was recharging, but the archangels checked you over and promised you’d be fine, you’d just need to rest a week or so. Like a comatose or hibernating state,” Paris reminded him.

“Did you need to use the bathroom at all? You must’ve been starving,” Dylan commented.

“I was hungry, but apparently I didn’t use the toilet,” I mumbled around a mouthful of food. I couldn’t even be embarrassed by the toilet question, I was too busy sating the hunger that had quickly made itself known. I’d be lucky if I didn’t wind up in a food coma afterward with the amount I was eating.

“Should probably slow down a bit,” Diane noted as she watched me shoveling down more food.

“She did save the world really, she can eat as much as she wants,” Matthew joked.

“Just don’t choke,” Hershel snorted.

“Got it,” I chuckled as I took a swig of my juice. I certainly did feel like I hadn’t eaten for far too long now.

Dessert came out soon after, and I was thrilled to dig into the cheesecake, demolishing off two large slices before I accepted defeat with my bloated stomach.

I learned that Miss Sage and the others had remained with Jackiel and the three graduates until Dezikiel had reached out, informing them they could all return to the Academy, that everything was now safe. Mr. Baron had been alerted too, and I was just glad to hear that they’d not run into any further trouble while I’d been in Heaven.

I headed back to my room, worn out and peopled out, blissfully full and wanting to just relax on my bed as I accepted that life was going to be okay now.

Too bad as soon as I clambered onto my bed with my men, a presence made itself known.

“Glad to see you up and about,” Michael said as he appeared in the room, causing me to sit up and grimace as my stomach protested at the hasty movement.

“Is something wrong?” I asked instantly.

“No, everything is fine, relax. I just wanted to check up on you, make sure you were doing well,” Michael said pleasantly.

“I’m good, we’re good,” I said carefully, knowing full well there was something he wasn’t telling me.

“I understand you will want to move on now, that you’d appreciate as normal a life as possible, but the High Council, which has now been restored with new members, believes we should be asking you and your hellhounds for assistance,” he explained. “I’d like to speak with you all about that.”

“Okay, what do they want us to help with?” I asked as I glanced around at my hellhounds. Creeper didn’t look impressed as he folded his arms, standing by the bed and between Michael and I. While Jack was expressionless, awaiting to hear what he said first. Chum and Bug looked wary, but not too distressed.

“You are the strongest being that walks the earthly plane now, and I’ve been assisting my brothers in hunting down demons and sending them back to hell or handling them appropriately. We were wanting to see if you’d be willing to help us. Lucifer has informed us the number that escaped during the moments the gates were opened is vastly more than we first thought. It’ll take us some time to deal with them all, and there’s already been growing reports among mankind that they’re struggling to keep under wraps. What with all the new technology and social media these days,” Michael explained.

Dylan had glossed over some dramas with demons at lunch, but Matthew had been quick to change the subject when Dezikiel had said we should just enjoy lunch. Now I knew why.

Still, being told I was the strongest being on earth felt like a stretch, and I hated feeling like I was on some grand pedestal now. I just wanted to be a normal girl.

“Would you mind accompanying me back to Heaven? You’ll be safe, I can guarantee that. Your hellhounds are welcome to come along as well,” Michael said.

“I think Lily would like to just have a quiet day, just relax,” Jack spoke up before I could respond.

“It’s okay, I’ll go, you guys can wait here,” I said as I slid off the bed. Better to get it over and done with now. The worst was over, I could feel that. But demons were still running amuck.

“Like hell we’re staying behind again,” Creeper growled as he stepped forward.

“Yeah, not happening,” Chum agreed as Jack stood up, clearly of the same mindset.

Bug was already on his feet and ready to join us, and I just smiled as an overwhelming sense of love and safety washed over me.
