“Last night, I hadn’t stared into my little boy’s eyes. Now that I have, things have changed.”

“I hope so,” she said softly.

“I know so.”

There was a knock at the door and a man in a white coat entered. He introduced himself as Doctor Fuchs, a pediatric nephrologist.

Before I could introduce myself, Grace jumped at the chance.

“This is Alex. He’s Ollie’s dad.”

“Oh great, nice to meet you Alex.”

“Nice to meet you too.”

Grace once again jumped in before I had a chance to speak.

“He’s interested in finding out if he’s a match for Ollie,” she said. “He’s willing to donate if so.”

“That’s great news,” the doctor said with a smile. “We need to hurry. Do you think you can get tested today?”

“I can get tested right now, if you’ll let me.”

“We can. I’ll show you where to go, and we can get started right away.”

“Perfect, let me just say goodbye to Ollie, and I’ll be ready to go.”

I turned around and found my son’s eyes growing heavy with sleep again. I kissed his forehead and whispered, “I love you, Ollie. Daddy will see you soon, okay?”

“Okay, Daddy,” he replied, his voice weak as he drifted off to sleep.

A lump formed in my throat, but I remained strong.

We needed to get him better, and I was committed to doing everything in my power to make sure he was healthy soon.

I knew we didn’t have much time.

Chapter 14

Grace

I paced the small hospital room, chewing off the last of my nails as I waited for any news from Alex. Ollie fell back to sleep, and I was once again alone with the sound of the beeping and buzzing around me. My heart raced and nearly exploded with anticipation every time I heard footsteps come near the door.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. “Jesus Christ,” I muttered as I jumped. My nerves were totally frayed.

It was Duncan. I answered and stepped out into the hallway.

“Hey Duncan,” I said.

“Hey, so how’s it going?”

The night before, after Alex and I had a chance to talk, Duncan had joined us. He knew that I had told Alex everything but didn’t ask too many questions.

“He’s getting tested now,” I said. “And I’m dying here, Duncan. This feels like the last chance we have at this. If he’s not a match, then what?”

“One step at a time, Grace. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.”

“I’m trying not to but seeing Ollie like this day after day is killing me. I fear he doesn’t have much time.” Tears stung at my eyes. I felt like all I did was cry these days.
