She smiled as he wrapped his arms around her from behind. He tucked his chin into her neck, and his scruff tickled the sensitive skin, sending tingles skittering over her and congregating in her core. He kissed the sensitive flesh behind her ear. Her desire sparked with the tender touch.

“I want you,” she whispered.

“Let’s have dessert first.”

“How about you have me for dessert?” she teased.

He laughed. “Just one bite of the cake and then I’m all yours.”

Atlas lifted the lid and handed her a fork from his pocket before he sat on their bed against the headboard. She climbed in next to him, grabbing the fork and cutting down the edge of the extra-large cupcake. Jasmine pushed the bite into her mouth, tasting the moist, chocolatey goodness. She moaned. “This is heaven.”

Atlas licked the top of her mouth. “Delicious.” His eyes blazed with want.

Her heart skipped. This never got old—seeing his desire for her. She’d thought for sure it would wane over time, but it only seemed to grow the longer they were together, and the more intimate and vulnerable they were with one another.

“Feed me one,” he commanded.

She cut another bite and fed it to him.

“Try the middle; it’s the best part.” He smirked.

She cut down the center, giggling. “Okay, chef, whatever you say. Weirdo.”

The fork snagged on something. She narrowed her eyes and leaned in. A dark chunk of something hard had settled in the middle. She cut around it. “What the hell?”

Atlas reached in and picked what looked like a small ring box up, wiping the cake crumbs into the container.

Jasmine’s eyes darted to his. Disbelief and hope swirled in her belly.

“Jasmine Evans—”

She slapped her hand to her mouth, dropping the fork in the box. “Yes.”

He chuckled. “I didn’t even ask you yet. I have a whole speech planned.”

“Okay, go ahead,” she said, her heart racing. Oh-my-god! This is really happening!

“You’re the love of my life. You and Zoey deserve the world, and I want to be the man who gives it to you. Marry me and let me spend the rest of my days next to you as your husband and Zoey’s father. I know she already calls me daddy, but I want to legally adopt her and make it official. And before you say anything, I already asked for Zoey’s approval.”

Tears spilled over her cheeks. “What did she say?”

He laughed. “She said she thought I already was.”

Jasmine giggled. Joy poured out of her. “Yes, Atlas. I’ll marry you. I’ll be your partner in life and parenthood—in all things. I love you.”

“I love you too.” He opened the ring box. A silver band glinted back, the black pearl in the center surrounded by small diamonds. “I picked you out a pearl because like you it was forged through pain, but the difficult process turned it into something beautiful.”

She wiped the tears from her face and held out her left hand. “It’s perfect.”

He smiled. “As are you.” He slid the ring onto her finger.

She flicked her gaze between the symbol of her engagement and the man who’d stolen her heart. Grabbing his face, she slammed her mouth onto his. Her tongue darted out, tasting mint and Atlas. He groaned and pulled back.

“What?” she asked.

He moved the cake box to the bedside table. “There’s one more thing.”

She searched his face.
