ROSEMARY

I was hoping to see Alex today, but I figured it would be at the fundraiser event tonight. I couldn’t have imagined that we’d be eating hotdogs and riding around Puget Sound playing truth or dare.

“Your turn,” I say as I pop the last bite of hotdog in my mouth.

So far, I’ve learned that Alex broke his arm climbing a tree when he was a kid, he’s scared of spiders, he loves peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, and got his first kiss when he was ten years old.

It’s so easy talking to him. I feel like I’ve known him my whole life—and in another life I could have.

“Dare,” he says, but frowns when he sees my excitement. He scratches his thumb across his two-day-old stubble. “Truth, I meant truth.”

“No way,” I laugh. “I’ve been waiting all game for you to finally say dare.”

He laughs. “Fine, if your dare is anything like your softball truth questions then I’ll take your dare.”

“All part of my plan to lull you into a false sense of security.” I wiggle my fingers together like I’m an evil genius. “You ready?”

He laughs again. “Bring it.”

“I want you to stand up on the railing.” I point to the front of the ferry. “With your arms spread out wide, and yell—”

“I’m going to stop you right there and say no way.”

“What?” I smack him on his upper arm. It’s firmer than I was expecting under his navy sweater. “Why?”

“Because like your dad, I too, would like to run for office someday and I don’t need that video footage of me acting like a fool floating around.”

Slumping back into my seat, I can’t blame him for saying no if that’s his reason. Besides, he let me pass when he dared me to sit next to a random tourist and speak only fake Swedish to them.

I stand up and hold my hand out to him. He takes it and we walk over to the railing. The wind is blowing harder and it’s colder by the railing. My hair whips around my head but it’s worth it for the sight of the city and the water in front of us.

“Where I’m from, the closest water I get to see are ponds and streams. There is nothing like this view.”

“I agree,” Alex says next to me.

Glancing over, I see that he’s not looking out at the water but he’s watching me.

I’m not normally someone who takes risks. I stepped out of my comfort zone and took a chance coming to Seattle. At this moment, with the way Alex’s gaze keeps dipping to look at my lips, I’m ready to take another chance. I lean in and start to close my eyes. The ferry hits a wave and I nearly lose my footing, but Alex catches me.

His strong arms tighten around me and I press my hands against his firm chest. I want to kiss him. Every cell in my body is ready to combust. I can feel the hard press of his cock against me and I know that he wants this too. I push up onto my toes to press my lips to his, but he pulls back at the last moment.

“I can’t,” he breathes out.

“Really?” I ask and try to push my way out of his arms.

“It’s not what you think,” he says grabbing onto my hand. “I want to kiss you. I really do. It’s all I’ve been thinking about.”

The ferry horn blows loudly overhead and we both flinch at the sound.

“What’s stopping you?” I ask.

“It’s complicated.”

“I’m sure I can follow.”

Alex stares at me like he can’t decide whether or not to tell me the truth. I start to pull my hand away from his, but he starts talking to stop me.
