“Were you following me?”

“What if I was?”

Sophia gritted her teeth. If someone came upon them now, this would not be good at all.

“What we did before is not something we can keep repeating. Especially now I know you’re going to be marrying Aimee.”

“Who said I was going to marry Aimee? It’s not certain.”

“From my father’s point of view, it is certain. Aimee’s adamant about it as well. Having met you, she’s certainly going to talk about wedding bells soon.” Sophia gestured at him. “When you’re wealthy and about to come into a title, plus possessing good looks, it’s going to be easy for her. You’ll be her husband by the end of the summer, I’m sure of it.”

Ford tilted his head to one side.

“You think I’m good-looking, then?”

“What?”

“That’s what you just said.”

Sophia groaned.

“This is not something we should be discussing, Mister Ford. You’re going to be marrying my sister, whether you like it or not. I’m sure everyone else will be of the same mindset, including your father. What I think doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.” He stepped towards her, his eyes never leaving her face. “Your opinion matters to me, Miss Sophia.”

Sophia didn’t know what to say to that. It wasn’t often someone said that to her. And she was a little embarrassed that she had called him good-looking.

Well, he is. You can, at the very least, admit that to yourself.

“Everyone seems to have this planned out,” Ford said quietly. “They seem determined to have your sister as my wife. But what do you think?”

“I beg your pardon?”

“Do you think it’s a good choice?”

Sophia stared at him.

“You do know I am not the best person to answer that. And my opinion wouldn’t matter, anyway.”

“But it matters to me. I would like to know.”

Sophia was momentarily speechless. He cared about her opinion. That had never happened before. Usually, it was an offhand comment, and then when Sophia tried to make an opinion, it was discarded. But in the two short interactions with Ford, he had actually listened to her. He really meant it.

It was strange, but it also felt nice knowing someone cared about her thoughts.

Even so, Sophia chose her words carefully.

“I think you would be a good match in terms of families. Your father’s title is prestigious.”

“But what about us as people?”

“What do you think?”

“I want to hear you first.”

Sophia wasn’t sure where this was going. But she was aware of Ford moving a little closer to her and that she was feeling a little warmer than she had been a moment ago. What was going on here?

She could only hope that nobody turned up to catch them; otherwise, Sophia was going to get into a lot of trouble. She didn’t see anyone listening to her saying this was purely an accident.
