“What?” Pierce leaned in. “This sounds salacious.”

“Pierce?”

“From the way you’re starting to go red, I’m sure it is.”

Thomas hadn’t realised that he was blushing. He cleared his throat.

“It’s just warm out here, that’s all.”

“I know you, Thomas. Something is going on, and I think it’s juicy.” Pierce sniggered. “Talk.”

Edwin swatted Pierre on the knee. But he got up onto his knees and peered at his brother.

“Thomas? What is it?”

“You remember me telling you two about that woman I met in the woods on my walk yesterday and then this morning?”

“I remember.” Edwin frowned. “You saw her again?”

“You could say that. And I finally found out her name.” Thomas sighed. “Sophia Burke.”

He watched as his brother’s eyes widened, and Pierce’s mouth fell open.

“Are you saying that the beautiful woman you met is Aimee Burke’s sister?” Pierce gasped.

“How do you not know this, Pierce? You don’t live that far away, so you’d be practically classed as a neighbour.”

“I’m a lot older than Sophia. The one I knew was Amelia. Our paths haven’t crossed.” Pierce tilted his head to one side in thought. “From what I’ve heard, Sophia is rather quiet and keeps to herself. She and I wouldn’t have interacted at all if we hadn’t had similar friends.”

“Well, she’s not dull,” Thomas grunted.

“Did I say she was dull?”

“You didn’t need to. I heard it in your voice.”

Pierce simply shrugged. Edwin frowned at him before turning back to his brother.

“Did you say anything? Is the viscount aware of you already knowing his youngest daughter?”

“No, I didn’t. And I’m not about to say anything about it to anyone.”

“Why not? It could ingratiate yourself more if you get on with everyone.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Edwin, the two times I saw Sophia were when we were alone. The moment I say that, a lot of questions will be asked and conclusions will be reached that are far from what really happened. Do you really think I should say anything with that in mind?”

“So, you’re looking out for her reputation?” Pierce chuckled. “You don’t need to worry so much about that. You haven’t before.”

“Not for the first time am I wondering how you and I are friends.”

“Because you like my company. I keep things interesting.”

Edwin rolled his eyes.

“Sometimes, I wonder about that.”

“Then don’t hang around me. I’m not forcing you.”
