“Of what?” I ask, confused.

His eyes bore into mine like he is trying to see the window into my soul when he gazes at me. “Of us,” he says.

Chapter sixteen

Kalum

If I wanted to know what the best tasting honey was like, I just tasted it between Aura’s legs. Her taste is addicting, like a drug, and I’m the addict feigning for his next hit. I’m nervous around her because I’m scared she would change her mind and reject me. And for the first time, I’m scared I won’t get the girl.

Aura is not the type to call you and blow up your phone or show up unannounced. She keeps to herself and doesn’t expect anything from me. When I took her out to eat breakfast, she orders the cheapest thing on the menu and asks if it’s okay. I made sure I ordered more food. I have never met anyone like her.

It’s Wednesday and I walk into the cafeteria and take a seat with Brian and Cason alone at a table. I told Jimmy to fuck off and go finish fucking Sarah and her friends. The talk I had with Brian about my intention with Aura made him rethink his relationship with Wendy and he told her he needed his space to think. Jimmy didn’t have to hide it from me or from anyone. We were boys. He could have told me he was screwing her and I would have never looked at her. Now, I can’t stand her and when I look at her, I want to smack myself for even thinking she was hot or attractive. I blame it on just being a guy and getting sucked into the Spencer Academy boys’ club motto. Fuck ‘em and move on.

I’m watching Aura from the corner of my eye and she is sitting with Exie and I notice she keeps bringing a homemade lunch when I paid Cason for the advance he paid on her account.

“Give me a minute,” I tell the guys, getting up and walking up to where Aura is sitting. When I approach her table, the cafeteria grows quiet.

Aura stops mid-sentence and looks up and her eyes scan the room behind me.

“Is everything okay?” she asks softly.

I pull a chair and sit next to her. “Why aren’t you eating from the cafeteria?”

She fiddles with the corner of her napkin and looks away.

“It’s too expensive and she won’t let anyone pay for her lunch,” Exie says in a derisive tone. “Including me. Now you know and I think it’s best you leave her alone.”

My head snaps at Exie. I know she is defending her friend and the way I have treated Aura; I get it. But my pride has me answering Exie.

“She doesn’t have to bring her own lunch because I paid Cason back the money he placed in her account the first day of school. She can buy whatever she wants, how many times she wants.”

Exie’s eyes narrow. “I have treated her better than you and she won’t take it from me, so where does that leave you.”

Aura finally speaks up. “Please, don’t fight. I made my own lunch and I actually like it better than the food here.” She opens a Tupperware, and the smell is heaven. She dips a fork inside mashed potatoes and what looks like homemade gravy. She angles her head toward me. “Do you want to try it? I made it and it’s really good.”

Exie raises a brow in challenge, and I give Aura a grin.

“If you made it, then I want to try it,” I tell her and lean closer so she can place a forkful of it inside my mouth. The flavor and butter of the mashed potatoes and gravy explode inside my mouth and I almost groan at how good it tastes. You could hear a pin drop inside the cafeteria because I let Aura feed me like we are a couple.

I swallow, ignoring everyone behind me. “You made this?”

“Yes.”

“It’s delicious.”

Her eyes light up and she gives me that pretty smile I yearn to witness. “Thank you. You see, it’s better than what they serve here.”

I lean close to her ear with Exie’s mouth hanging open. “There is something I know that tastes better,” I say softly, openly flirting.

Her head angles and now she is facing me, a shade of pink creeps on the curve of her cheekbones and up close, I notice she has a couple of freckles on her nose.

“Be careful, princess. I might kiss you in front of the whole school.”

Her lips part and fuck it, I take her lips in mine and kiss her in front of the entire cafeteria, claiming her. I want everyone to know that she’s mine and that Aura belongs to me. My hands cup her face and I deepen the kiss with the faint taste of fruity punch mixed with her homemade gravy, and it tastes better than a meal.

When I pull back, Exie is still in a state of shock. I brush my thumb over Aura’s swollen lips. “You can get as many cans of iced tea as you want, I think raspberry is your favorite,” I say.

Aura squints her eyes slightly and asks, “It was you? The locker?”
