“Yeah, it was me. I know I was a total dick to you but I figured I could make it up to you somehow without you knowing.”

Exie is still watching me like a hawk. “Break her heart or hurt her in any way, and I will kick your ass. Then my brother will,” she warns.

“I won’t break her heart and tell your brother that Aura is mine,” I counter.

“She isn’t yours. She’s one of your housekeepers, remember.”

I flinch and then glance at Aura, but she averts her gaze. The moment we just shared tarnished by my own doing. Having Exie say it out loud hits home and what everyone must think about Aura. And it’s all my fault. I was a dick and now it’s blowing up in my face. It’s like every time I take two steps in the right direction with her, I’m yanked back to where I started.

I glance at Aura. “I’m sorry for telling people about our situation and how you came to stay in my house. It was cruel and I hurt you. For that, I’m sorry.”

Her hands shake slightly when she replaces the lid back on her food and places it inside her lunch pack. She doesn’t look at me and I feel her slipping away. Exie reminding her what everyone thinks of her because of the things I said. At first, it was because I was annoyed with the attraction, I felt toward her and wasn’t thinking. Then I thought it was convenient to warn everyone away because if I couldn’t have her, then no one can. In the end, it all blew up in my face and now I need to do whatever it takes to repair the damage.

“Aura.”

She doesn’t answer and from my peripheral, Exie slouches in her chair and blows out a breath, rolling her eyes. I ignore her and tell Aura how I feel because I know she can hear me.

“I promise. I’m going to make it right. It’s one world and you belong in it.”

She knows I’m referring to the morning after I held her in her sleep. I’m just going to have to prove myself to her.

“Dude, you just kissed Aura in front of everyone in the cafeteria. People are posting it on the school chat and newspaper.” Cason shows me a snap of me kissing her passionately on the mouth earlier today.

“Send me that,” I tell him while I lace my cleats for tonight’s game. “What is your point? I like her. What is the problem?”

“The rumor is that you’re fucking your maid. Sarah talking shit saying you left her because you cheated on her and that is why she had no choice to fuck Jimmy.”

I snort. “You know that’s a lie. Whatever, I like her and I’m not going to let people get involved in my personal life.”

“Do you?”

My head snaps toward Cason. “Do I what?”

“Really like her? Or is it because you haven’t been able to seal the deal?”

“What the fuck?” I stand up and get in his face and he takes a step back by my sheer size. “Watch whatever you say next because right now you are pissing me off,” I say with my teeth clenched.

He raises his hands defensively when his back hits the lockers. “I’m just saying, if you are really sure about her, then cool, but if you are not sure, then leave her alone. Kalum, she’s been through enough.”

“You don’t get it.”

“Don’t get what?”

“She is it for me. You don’t understand. I have never felt this way about anyone. I can’t get her out of my mind, and I don’t want to.”

Cason nods. “Then I got your back and I’ll have hers.”

I slap him on the shoulder. “Thanks. Now let’s go kick some ass. We have a game to win.”

Chapter seventeen

Aura

“Where are we going? I ask.

“You’ll see.”

Kalum says he is taking me on a surprise joy ride and to bring my swim suit and a change of clothes. I’m wary but excited. His parents are out of town and he just showed up and knocked on my door this morning and asked if I would go with him.
