Her hands reach out and twist in my shirt as uncertainty dances across her features. “I thought that was more heat-of-the-moment stuff. Not, like, an actual confession.”

Something clicks into place. I don’t know why this didn’t occur to me before.

“Angel, have you ever been with a man?”

Her eyes flare and her cheeks bloom an instant red. She tries to pull out of my arms but I don’t let her. I can’t stop touching her, not when what she’s about to tell me will take our relationship to the next level.

To have her trust me with something so special—fuck. I didn’t have the words to describe how honored I was. It also called to the primitive side of my manhood. I loved knowing I’d be her first—and her last.

Tilting her chin up with two fingers, I bring her glassy eyes back to mine.

“No,” she hiccups. “You’re—what happened last night was…was my first time, doingthat.”

“Thank you for telling me that.”

“I know it’s weird,” she begins, picking at the material of her shirt. “It’s embarrassing to say out loud—”

“Ivy, angel, stop. It’s not weird. Or embarrassing. To each in their own time, yeah? If I’m being honest, knowing I’m the only man you’ve trusted enough to be intimate with is hot as fuck.”

“Really?”

“Seriously hot.” I grasp the back of her neck and pull her forward until she’s practically on my lap. My mouth hovers over hers. I breathe her in and out, feeling her hot breath against me too. “I love the idea that you’re all mine. Only mine. That you’ve waited for your husband to claim you.”

“We’re not married yet.”

“Soon,” I murmur, finally pressing my lips to hers for a deep, hungry kiss. She moans into my mouth, trying to take the kiss in a more heated direction.

“Now,” I say, lifting her up and placing her back down on her feet. “You need to get dressed before I’m tempted to go further. I had my friend Lennox drop off some of his fiancée’s clothing last night to give you more options.”

“I wouldn’t mind that.” There’s a knowing smile on her face. I want so badly to scoop her up again and march into the bedroom to keep her deliciously occupied all day. To do exactly what her body and teasing words are hinting at. But I won’t, not yet.

She knows I desire her, that I want her. What I hope to show her today is that I need her too. Just her. She’s more than a hot body I can hold in the night, she’s my everything. The reason my heart beats.

“Tempting, angel, but I want to take you around the house. Show you the land so that you feel protected and know what to do if you ever feel threatened.”

Her eyes dart back and forth over my face, like she’s trying to discover something.

“Okay,” she says the word slowly, taking a quick step away from me before turning. “Everything’s okay though, right? No one’s found me, have they?”

“No, you’re safe. It would just give me peace of mind.”

She thinks about that for a moment. “Me too actually,” she huffs on a chuckle. “I didn’t think of it that way. Give me five minutes and I’ll be right out.”

I open my mouth to tell her to take her time, but she’s already scurrying down the hall.

A ding from the tablet has me flipping the device over to see what’s come in. When I open the file, my body goes tense.

A hit has been put out on Ivy. With a price tag high enough to catch every criminal’s eye.

Chapter Eight

Ivy

I have never been so muchin love.

The mountains are incredible. The views and crisp air have done me a world of good, transforming me from inside out in only the span of an afternoon. Connor may have had something to do with that too.

While the cabin and its surrounding security measures are impressive, they make me anxious. I hope that we’ll never have to use them, but I figure that’s wishful thinking. I’d stared at my cell this morning, fighting the urge to turn it back on, wanting to see if my dad had sent me a message to let me know he was safe, but I feared being tracked if I did.
