Connor had agreed I should leave it off, but it felt so weird not to have it on me. What was the point of carrying a useless brick around with me though? Especially as we were hiking up a partial hill. The less weight I was carrying, the better.

Turning the final bend in the path that would lead us back to the cabin, I try to school my breath. I don’t think I’ve worked out this hard in forever. My morning runs did not prepare me for the altitude of the mountains. The last time I struggled to breathe like this was…well, after Connor did amazing things to me with his month.

A different kind of heat engulfs my body.

My eyes flick from watching where I’m stepping on the path up to Connor. He’s walking in front of me, ensuring the path is clear and safe. The gesture is amazingly sweet. And the view isn’t bad either. Denim does wonderous things to his ass and thick thighs.

I’m unable to tear my gaze away before he catches me, and Connor chuckles at me before reaching backward for my hand. I don’t hesitate. Our fingers intertwine as the path smooths out and the cabin comes into view.

“One more time for good measure,” he says, giving my hip a playful bump. “What’s in the west?”

“A path that leads to Lennox’s cabin,” I recite, parroting back all the facts and safety protocols he explained to me today.

“And what will be the first sign of someone on our land?”

I love that he calls it our land. Like I’m already tied to him. God, I hope I will be soon. My feelings for Connor are growing by the minute. Every second I spend with him I see how much he cares for me. He may look gruff and wild, but he is all heart and goodness.

“The buzz of the alarm. Like we heard last night. And,” I go on for good measure, “if the buzz starts pulsing with one-second beats that means someone is trying to tamper with one of the cameras.”

Wrapping his arm around my shoulders, Connor brings me tight into his side. Doing the same with his waist, I rest my head on his chest as we make our way around the cabin.

“The temperature is going to drop tonight. How about dinner and sunset watching around the firepit?”

“I’ve never sat around a firepit,” I tell him, tilting my head up to grin at him. The idea sounds fun.

“Then it’s settled. You go in and shower off all this dirt, I have some things to do out here.”

A shower does sound really good after that exerting walk. Grabbing a handful of his thermal vest, I pull Connor down for a kiss. He indulges me, wrapping me tighter in his arms. When I walk away, turning around to take him in one more time, he’s watching me with a hungry look in his eyes.

Good. I want his hunger for me to match what I’m feeling for him. I’ve had only one erotic encounter with him, but my body is needy for more. It’s like he’s turned a switch on in me and all I crave is his touch, his kisses and the feel of his hard body against mine.

After my shower—a mostly cold shower to calm my libido—I borrowed another of Connor’s shirts and slipped on my workout shorts. Heading out into the main room, I was thinking about snooping in the kitchen to see if I could pull something together for dinner when a flash of something catches my attention from outside.

Fear zips through me but is gone as fast as it comes. I know I’m safe here; Connor has made sure of it. Stepping closer to the window, I scan the area.

“What the—fuck.” Saliva pools in my mouth as my brain struggles to catch up to what I’m seeing.

Connor. Shirtless. Chopping wood.

It’s the most erotic thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Sweat glistens off his body as he lifts both arms above his head. The axe he’s holding catches the light before it arches down with a cracking force. Connor’s arms and shoulders bulge with power. His face is tight in concentration as he sets up a new piece of wood.

Again, he swings and arches, splitting the wood. I swear my body goes into overdrive when he tosses the axe to the side and picks up the stubborn piece of wood. With his gloved hands, he wedges his fingers into the middle crack and pulls. The wood splits in his hands.

I’m going to pass out. I’m so wet for him that I’m probably dehydrated. Running a hand down my chest, I’m seriously tempted to run back to the main bedroom and take care of the pulsing ache in my core. I am that turned on.

As if sensing my plight, Connor looks up as he’s wiping the sweat from his brow and catches me. His gaze flicks down to where my hand is braced on my stomach. Can he see my heavy breathing? The way my legs are squeezing together, trying to relieve the ache? He must, because he stops what he’s doing and prowls to me.

The back sliding door opens and I make a run for it—right into his arms. He catches me easily, lips seeking mine. The kiss is hard, a mashing of our lips, teeth and tongues. The need is too great to slow down, to stop and think about what’s come over us.

All I can think about are his hands. How I need them on me. Touching every inch.

I need him to claim me. Now. My heart is his and there’s no going back now.

Chapter Nine

Connor

There is onlyone thought in my mind: claim her. Without breaking contact with her mouth, I sweep her into my arms. My feet know where to go. I kick the door to our bedroom shut and don’t stop kissing her until we reach the bed.
