“I thought the same thing.” I was sure that Isaac was looking for payback.

“How do we proceed?” one of the men asked.

“We can’t just let them get away with this.”

I held back a sigh. Marco had warned me that the men wanted blood. I suspected that most of the men at this table would have been happy if Sasha had died that night. It would have given them an excuse to make a move against the Petrov’s, and peace would never have been achieved.

“We can’t retaliate until we are sure that the Petrov’s are the one who needed to pay. Doing so would end...poorly.”

I knew that it wasn’t what the men wanted to hear. They wanted to retaliate. Sasha had been injured, but there were people who had been killed.

“So you are suggesting that we simply let the Petrov’s take our sons once more and get away with it?” one of the men said. I looked over to see who was speaking, and I groaned when I realized it was Vince. Vince was one of the oldest men at the table, and he rarely spoke out against a decision made by the Don. He’d served both my father and my grandfather.

He had said nothing when I had announced my marriage to Sasha. But his nephew had been one of the victims of the shooting, so I could understand his anger.

“I’m saying that I need one of you to do your damn jobs and find me the shooter. Once you do, I’ll gladly take all the vengeance that you want.”

No one said anything. After all, they had failed me. As Don it wasn’t my job to go hunt down the person who tried to murder me. It was theirs. And so far they had been more than useless.

“Until someone brings me a name, we stand down.” Marco and I had discussed what our next move was going to be. He thought we should retaliate in some way. He wasn’t comfortable with letting the Petrov’s off if they were the ones who had sent the shooter. He was worried that by doing nothing, I would look weak.

I had the opposite thought. My father was a ruthless man who didn’t suffer fools, but he wasn’t a rash decision maker. There were many times when his men had urged him to make a move against an enemy, and instead of acting on impulse, he waited for the right time.

“Now,” I said, gesturing to the pile of files I had placed in the middle of the table, “I want you all to prepare a read out for me regarding the new territories. Some of the ports Petrov gave us are shit, but I’m sure with the amount of experience at this table, someone can give me a viable solution.”

There was a grumble of anger, most of these men had served my father, and they didn’t like being reminded of their age, but I ignored it. I wanted obedience, but I couldn't expect that these men were going to give it to me quietly. Wasn’t the Italian way.

“I want solutions by next week,” I said, as I pulled out my phone. “On all my problems.”

No one said anything, but I knew that they received my message. Besides, I was anxious to hear that Sasha had made it to school alright. Marco had yet to text me, and I wanted to get back into my office, so I could give them a phone call. I’d been nervous all morning about letting her out of my sight, and while I trusted my brother to keep her safe, a part of me regretted not putting my foot down.

Grabbing the door handle of my office, I immediately knew something was wrong. I hadn’t shut the door on the way out, and the knob was too warm almost as if someone had been here only moments ago.

Those were the last thoughts I had before the whole fucking world exploded around me.
