I could see her retreating back into herself. I didn’t know what had happened to her over the last few years, but whatever it had been, had made her terrified. “Is it your father? Is he trying to harm Dom?”
I couldn’t remember if her father had some sort of grudge against the Blanchi’s. Lord knew that there was enough bloodshed to go around.
Anastasia whimpered slightly and shook her head. “I need to go,” she told me, shaking off my grip. “He’s going to wonder where I am. If he knew…”
“Who?” I demanded. I reached out to grab Anastasia, but she shoved me away causing me to fall against the stacks.
“Shit,” I muttered again. My shoulder had dislodged several books. “Anastasia!” I yelled, as she ran away.
I tried to follow after her, but the books that slid off the shelf were impeding my path. “Anastasia!” I yelled again. I didn’t care that I was screaming in the library, or that my things were still at my table. I wasn’t going to let my only lead get away.
I ran out of the stacks, but Anastasia was surprisingly fast for someone who looked so sickly. The stacks led to a side exit that most students didn’t use. I suspected that Anastasia went through there. It was secluded back here, and she would have easily been able to sneak in and out.
For a moment, I hesitated. I had left my phone at the table, and I didn’t know what the hell I was getting myself into. The last time I had seen Anastasia, I’d been shot. But her words spurred me forward, and I walked through the exit before I could think too much about it.
“Stop!” I yelled. Anastasia hadn’t gotten far. She turned to look at me, her eyes wide and fearful.
“You shouldn’t have followed me,” she whispered.
I opened my mouth to ask her once more who the hell was coming after Dom, but before I could another voice interrupted.
“You really should have stayed in the library.”
I turned, surprised to see Zane’s face. I was even more shocked when he slammed a fist into the back of my head and I crumbled to the ground.
