I was confused. I knew that Ivy wasn’t extremely happy about this marriage, but she hadn’t seemed as upset as she’d become.

“Are you upset about the fact that I gave Mikey a gift?” It was an odd thing to be mad about. “Would you rather I not have given him a gift?”

Ivy released a heavy breath. Her entire body shuddered. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but whatever it was, weighed heavily on her. “The gift was really nice,” she said. Her voice was soft, but her body was still stiff as a plank.

I wrapped my arms around her midsection and pressed my lips to her ear. To the people around us, we probably just looked like a couple in love, which meant that they would give us a wide berth. No one wanted to break apart a pair of newlyweds.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” I whispered in her ear. She shivered as my breath played across the sensitive outer shell.

Her eyes were still on her brother. “He’s never going to have this.” Her voice was so soft that I had to strain to hear what she was saying. “He’s going to die before he even gets a chance to live.”

She pulled away from me quickly and wiped a few tears discretely from her cheek. I reached out. “Ivy…”

She shook her head and plastered a fake smile on her face. “I’m going to go and make sure Mikey gets in the car alright,” she said, cutting me off. “I’ll be back in a few.”

Ivy walked away before I could stop her.

It was probably for the best. After all, there was nothing that I could say or do to make her feel better. Mikey was a very sick kid, and while the Blanchi’s had untold power in New York, cancer was a bigger monster than even I could face.
