“Isaac looks closer in age to me,” I said, egging Leo on. “Why wouldn’t my father want to pair the two of us off? Seems like a better match.”

“And you know this based on having a five-minute conversation with the two of us?” he asked. I could see that his anger was beginning to dissipate, which was irritating. I needed him to be off kilter. This might be my only chance to get anything from him that might help me to get the upper hand.

It was clear just from our conversation that Leo formed his opinion of me, which meant that my usual tactics weren’t going to work as well.

“Well, considering that my father decided to marry me off to you without me even knowing your name. I don’t think that a great deal of thought was given to this decision.”

“Or a great deal of thought was given to the decision. Your father wants me to become Pakhan.”

I tried not to react to his words. “Oddly enough.”

“Not so odd. My father was loyal to him.”

“Was?”

“He’s dead.”

I felt my heart soften toward him, just for a moment. “And you want to become Pakhan? Interesting.”

Leo reached out and grabbed the glass that he had discarded when Isaac came over. He downed the alcohol and melted ice.

“I will meet you at your father’s house tomorrow for dinner.”

“Fuck off,” I said. I started to walk away from him, but before I could get too far, he reached out and grabbed me. His fingers squeezed around my skin, which was still tender from my father.

“Don’t push me, Katarina,” he warned, his voice low. “I’m not like these other little boys that you enjoy playing with.”

Despite my pain, I laughed. “You better get used to this.” I jerked my arm out of his grip. “Because I won’t be easy to control.”
