“His girlfriend died.” My mouth went dry.

“What?”

Was I about to learn what happened to the mysterious Blanchi daughter that I never knew about? And how did Isaac know about this? Yeah, Leo was his brother but were they so close that Isaac would cop to Leo’s involvement with the daughter of our greatest enemy? If that was the case, my father would never have picked Leo to be the next Pakhan. If that news ever came up, no one would ever respect Leo again.

The entire Bratva had lost someone to the Blanchi family, and even I would not be safe if someone knew that I had met with Andrea. My own life might be forfeit, and my father was our leader.

“There was a car accident, and she was run off the road,” Leo said. “I think it changed him.”

I blinked. “Huh?”

Isaac gave me an odd look. “Leo’s girlfriend died, and I think it changed him. I thought that he would finally leave the Bratva, make good on what he was always saying, but instead, he doubled down.”

Isaac’s paused, and he looked at me as though expecting something. “I’m not sure what you want me to say,” I said. “No offense, but this is not exactly groundbreaking. So, Leo didn’t want to join the Bratva.” I shrugged. “Plenty of people enjoy the money but wish they could get rid of all the other shit.”

“You don’t think that it is weird that suddenly Leo wants to be Pakhan? Just four years ago, he was planning to leave the family, even if that meant death, and now, he wants to lead?”

There was an intensity in his voice that made me wary. I was not as naïve as Isaac might think. I knew that despite his nice guy act, he was getting involved because he wanted something.

“Maybe, he just finds me to be so amazing that when he heard that my father was stepping down, he could not help himself.” I thought that Isaac was going to give me a smile, but he did not.

“I don’t want you to get hurt, which is why I am telling you this.”

I released a heavy sigh. I was so tired of the men in my life thinking that I needed their protection. I knew who Leo was—kind of.

Well, I did not know him, but I knew that there was something that he was hiding from me. I was not completely fucking moronic. Leo was not marrying me because he thought I was incredible, and he could not see himself living without me. He wanted power.

Isaac was no better. I would not be surprised if he was in the park looking for me, so that he could share this ridiculous news.

“Look,” I said, not wanting to be rude to Isaac for some reason. I knew what it felt like to be pissed off at your family, so in some ways, I empathized with him. “I appreciate that you believe that you are doing the right thing, but there’s not much that I can do about your brother becoming Pakhan. Trust me, if I could. I would.”

“I know that,” he said. He ran a hand through his hair once more, sending the blonde curls all over the place. It made his already handsome face seem more youthful, and for a moment, I wondered if he was someone that could be a contender for my husband once I got rid of Leo.

I shook the thought from my mind. Isaac might be easier to control than his brother, but even I was not that tacky.

“I guess I just wanted you to know that there is more to my brother than that easy smile that he likes to throw around. There’s something more afoot here, and I think that you might just be smart enough to figure it out.”
