I didn’t understand why Leo was at my door. After all, he was the one who made last night what it was, and just because the two of us slept together again didn’t mean I was interested in a repeat of his scolding.

As I pulled on a sweatshirt, I reminded myself that I had a way of getting rid of Leo. I just needed to find it. And I wasn’t thinking about Andrea Blanchi. He’d disappeared since that first night, and I had not heard from him since. If he was not going to help me like he promised, then I was going to have to deal with this myself.

Leo was making it easy for me by being such an asshole.

“What are you doing?” I asked. When I walked back into the living room, I had not seen Leo anywhere, and so, I checked the kitchen where I found him searching through my cabinets with the bouquet of flowers lying on the counter next to him.

“I’m looking for a vase,” he said.

“We don’t have any.”

Leo stopped his checking and turned to look at me incredulously. “You don’t have a vase?”

I shrugged. “We don’t get many flowers.” Which was true. I could not remember the last time that someone had brought either myself or Natasha flowers.

“That’s a shame.” It sounded like he really meant it. I remained quiet. Leo wasn’t a complete monster of a man, and there were plenty of those in the Bratva, but he clearly had some control and anger issues. “We will have to pick up a vase when we are out.”

I didn’t say anything. I was ready to get ice cream and return home. One of the only reasons that I was going was because I knew that Leo wasn’t going to let it go.

“Let’s go,” I said.

For a moment, Leo looked as though he wanted to say something, but I walked out of the door not allowing him to say anything.

I dipped my spoon into my vanilla ice cream, mixing it around as I counted down the moments until we went home.

Leo tried to make conversation with me, but I had not given him more than one-word answers, and I could feel him growing more and more irritated as the hour ticked by. Good, I thought. He can stay mad.

“Why did you come if you didn’t want to be here?”

I dropped my spoon and gave him my full attention. “Because if not, I assumed that you were just going to try and screw me into submission, and while I enjoy the sex, I wasn’t in the mood.”

The woman who was sitting next to us released a little gasp, and I rolled my eyes. Yea, I thought. Go ahead and clutch your pearls. I was sure that Leo had done a lot worse in his life than have sex, and from the way she’d been making eyes at him, I expected that she would have gladly spread her legs if he’d asked.

“I wouldn’t have done anything to you if you told me no.”

I knew that he was trying to back me into a corner by telling me that the only reason that the two of us slept together was because I wanted it, and not acknowledging that any intense conversation led to him avoiding it using sex.

“Are we just going to go back and forth about who is more screwed up?”

Leo released a heavy breath and shook his head. “No,” he said. “I’m supposed to be apologizing to you.”

“I didn’t ask for you to apologize to me,” I reminded him.

Leo nodded. “I know, but you deserve it. Last night wasn’t about you.”

“So, you’ve said. Not that you have told me why you were such an asshole.” Leo had been in an odd mood last night the moment that he arrived. It was almost like my reminding him that we weren’t an actual couple set him off, which I didn’t understand.

Though we clearly enjoyed one another physically, we weren’t in love, so I did not know what exactly he expected. I was being forced to marry him, and he was being forced to do the same.

If not for my father, I doubted the two of us would have given each other more than a second glance, and that likely would have been just because we wanted to fuck.

“I saw my mother before I went to the party, which is why I was late.”

“I thought you got wrapped up in work?”

“I lied.”
