“I think that we get along just fine,” I said.

“Just because the two of us enjoy screwing one another doesn’t mean that we are going to get along, and I think that the two of us would have a better time of things if we weren’t constantly at each other's throats.”

I did not say anything as I mulled over Leo’s words. He’d said similar things before, and he was making an effort, but I didn’t trust him. I had learned long ago that the only person you could trust in these situations was yourself.

But it looked like Andrea Blanchi passed me up for Isaac, which meant that I was likely on my own, and right now, I had nothing on Leo.

As much as I hated to admit it, it might be easier to work with him than against him. “Fine,” I said. “As long as you recognize that I’m your equal.”

“Done.”

The quickness upon which he agreed nearly gave me whiplash, but I wasn’t in a place to question it too much. I needed an ally, and even if he did not know it, Leo was about to become one.

I reached out my hand, trying not to shiver and he grasped it in his own. “Here’s to a new start.”

I didn’t say anything as we shook. After all, I had no intention of letting go of the past.
