“Oh? Was she not in your class?”

The woman nodded her head. “She was, but she dropped out after her first semester. I believe that she decided to change her major from music to…” The woman released a small chuckle. “Well, I am not really certain what she changed to.”

“But you remembered her?”

The woman looked at me as though I had grown a second head, and I knew immediately that I had said something wrong and odd.

“Everyone remembers Maddy,” she said. “Considering what happened to her.”

The question of what happened was on the tip of my tongue, but the sound of a sharp crash caused both me and Natasha to jump slightly.

I turned to the sound of the crash and was surprised to see a man cleaning up some spilled instruments. “Sorry,” he mumbled as he went back to whatever he was doing.

I stiffened at the sight of him. I had not realized that there was anyone else in the room, and though I was sure that he did not care too much about what we were discussing, there was something about the sight of him that made me nervous.

“Well,” I said, standing up and grabbing my bag. “You’ve given me a great deal to think about.”

“Do you not have any other questions about the music program?”

“Nope,” I said, popping the P at the end of the word. “I think that you have answered all of my questions.

The two of us had not talked about music much at all, so I could understand her shock, but I was not interested in standing around and talking for much longer, especially with someone else in the room.

“Let’s go.” I reached out and took Natasha by the wrist. I rushed the two of us out of the room before the professor could stop us.

“Don’t you want to know more?” She asked, her tone just above a whisper.

I shook my head. “She’s getting suspicious, and I don’t want anyone to know that I am poking around.”

Natasha remained quiet, and the two of us rushed out of the music hall as quickly as we could. “Whatever happened to Madeline, sounds like it was really bad,” Natasha whispered.

I tensed. It did sound bad. We both saw the way that the professor looked at us when we mentioned Maddy, almost as though she were shocked that we did not know what happened to the girl.

“Hey!” A male voice called out.

Both Natasha and I turned to look at the young man who was rushing after us. He was the same person from inside of the music room, and I felt myself stiffen as he rushed towards me.

“You wanted to know about Maddy Stephens?”

I crossed my arms over my chest and leveled him with what I hoped was a withering stare. “Who are you?”

The guy next to us looked younger than Leo, but older than the two of us. He was dressed like a normal college student in a sweatshirt and jeans. His blonde hair was floppy, which made him look completely non-threatening. But I knew better than anyone that sometimes the most dangerous people looked completely harmless.

“I knew Maddy,” he said.

“How?”

I was being combative, which was normally not the way that someone acted when they needed information, but I did not know this person, and I was not interested in interacting with a stranger.

We were here without guards, and no one knew where we were, which made us easy pickings in some ways. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to my cousin, which was why I wasn’t just going to take what this floppy haired freak had to say at face value.

“She was in the music program. She didn’t drop out after her first semester. She just stopped playing flute.”

My brow rose. “How many instruments did this chick play?” I asked, before I could help myself.

“A ton.” He said, begrudgingly. “She was a wicked talented prodigy.”

“So what happened to her?” Natasha asked.
