I rolled my eyes. If there was one thing I could count on, it is that my grandmother never found anything to joke about.

“I do not know what Papa’s age has to do with me.” I looked down at my nails. I needed a fill, desperately. Something that I was going to have to take care of soon.

My father released a heavy sigh. “I need to consider stepping down, and what happens with the Bratva when I do.”

That drew my attention, and I felt my heart starting to beat quickly at his words. “You are stepping down?” I sounded breathless as I spoke, and that made my grandmother’s lips thin even more.

“Not right away, but I will eventually.”

“Why?” I asked. I was sure that my father would never leave as Pakhan unless he was in the ground. That was pretty standard in this life. You were in until you died, and if you managed to make it to my father’s age, you were practically a relic, especially these days.

My father stood up from his seat and walked towards the bar cart. He poured himself another glass of vodka. My eyes narrowed as I looked at the glass. My father was the type of man who enjoyed one glass of vodka as a nightcap, and one glass of wine with dinner. The fact that he was having two glasses in such a short time made me nervous.

Something was wrong.

There was more to all of this than him desiring to step down.

“I have already chosen my successor,” he said as he poured a glass.

I sat up straight, and my mouth was dry. I had dreamed of this moment many times in my life since I realized that my father would not have any more children. There would not be a son to inherit, which meant that the Bratva would be mine. Despite my misgivings over this situation, I felt a shiver of delight go up my spine.

This was my moment. To finally have control over my life. To have control over everything.

“Leo Petrov is my first choice.”

I blinked, unsure if I was hearing my father correctly.

“The Petrovs are an old family, and Leo has proven himself a loyal soldier.”

“It’s a family full of boys as well,” my grandmother said. I glanced over to see a genuine smile on her face. “That bodes well for the future.”

“What future?” I asked when I finally found my voice. “What the fuck are you both talking about?”

“Language,” my father snapped. His eyes flashed a warning at me, and I knew that I pissed him off. “It is not becoming of a young lady to speak in such a manner.”

I nearly growled. “What areyougoing on about? Why would any of the Petrovs matter?”

I knew that Petrov family well. At least, some of them. Like most families in the Bratva, there were tons of them. I met the Russian sect when I was a child. Their compound was near ours, and I would play with the boys.

I’d met the younger cousin in New York, but Leo Petrov was elusive to me. “Isn’t he a lawyer or something?”

“He went to Harvard,” my father said, pride in his voice.

“So?” I still did not understand why any of this mattered. Why would Leo Petrov have something to do with my father stepping down as Pakhan. I was next in line, just as he had been in line to inherit when his father died. “What the hell are you saying?” I asked.

My father took a seat. His bright blue eyes bore into mine, and this time, my stomach turned as I started to realize what the hell was going on.

“You are going to marry Leo Petrov, and he will take over as Pakhan.”
