“It’s kind of a moot point at this point.” At least, on that, Natasha and I agreed. “Everyone knows that the two of you are expected to walk down the aisle. A proposal at this point is just a formality.”

I reached out and took the postcard from Natasha. “I don’t know what comes next,” I admitted. “But I need to find Maddy. If Leo is the father of her baby, that’s going to be enough to get him out of my life.”

I ignored the way my heart twisted at the idea. I didn’t care about Leo. Screwing him was fun, and that was all. Besides, I did not want to be tied to a man who had a child with another woman, one whom he may have harmed. I didn’t think that he did harm Maddy though. After all, why would she send him a postcard if she were running from him?

“We should head back,” I said, gathering the rest of my things. “I don’t want anyone asking questions about where we have been, and I am sure the guards are awake by now.”

“Kat,” Natasha said.

I stopped. “Yea?”

“Maybe, we should let this go.”

“Why?”

“Because this woman and her child could be in real danger. If you keep looking for her, you might be exposing them to danger.”

My mouth went dry as I realized that Natasha was right.

“I’m serious,” Natasha repeated, pressing the issue further. “Promise me that you will think about this before you go any further. I know that you want to get rid of Leo, but is it worth it if you put an innocent person in danger?”

I did not say anything as I threw away my cup. Unlike Natasha, I wasn’t selfless. Maddy Blanchi could get dragged back to her family by her hair for all I cared. If it got me what I wanted, I would sell her out without a second thought.

But if there was a baby involved…

I ignored the small voice of my conscience. “Let’s go,” I said, ignoring Natasha’s question. I feared that my cousin would be ashamed of me if she heard the answer.
