“I didn’t say that I agreed with it,” Leo told me.

This made me snort in derision. “You didn’t exactly turn down the offer, did you?”

“I didn’t turn it down because it would have looked suspicious, and besides, if I didn’t take it, your father would have had to find someone else. This meant that I was able to get close enough to protect you—”

I snapped. I shot up off the couch so quickly that I nearly tripped over the hem of my dress. “I don’t need your protection!”

I caught sight of myself in one of Leo’s mirrors. My face was red, and my chest was rising and falling with anger as I tried to catch my breath. “I am not Maddy.” The words tasted like acid on my tongue because no, I wasn’t my sister. If I were, maybe my mother would have stuck around.

“I know that you think you don’t need—”

I stepped forward, so that I was now in Leo’s face. He too was breathing hard, and I assumed that this was his way of attempting to put a lid on his anger. Leo might not be like other Bratva men, but I could feel the danger rolling off of him. He may not have killed that girl, but he would kill. He would do it for the people he cared about. Of that, I had no doubt, and somehow, that made him more dangerous.

“I was perfectly content with my life until you decided to barge into it.”

“Were you?” He asked, his tone made me shiver, and I could feel my desire for him starting. This was what we did.

We fought and then, we fucked. I would pull away, and Leo would snap me back. The entire process was exhausting, exhilarating, and everything in between.

“Yes.” My voice was breathy as I spoke, and I hated myself once more for the effect that he had one me. “Things were fine before you.”

I was trembling, but I was not sure if it was because of my body desiring Leo, or if it was because my body was starting to process everything that had happened. I was shivering, but this time, I started to feel cold.

“Katarina.” Leo sounded concerned, and he reached out for me.

Though I did not want to, I collapsed in his arms, my body shaking slightly as I tried not to release the sobs that had built up inside of me. I could not remember the last time that I had cried like this.

“It’s okay,” Leo said. He pressed his lips to my hair as he tried to calm me. “I’m here. Everything is going to be alright.”

My body sagged as my energy was zapped. Leo reached down and took me in his arms. I did not have the strength to stand any longer, and though I despised myself for my weakness, the emotional turmoil that I was dealing with was too much.

And for the first time in as long as I could remember, I allowed someone else to care for me.
