She leveled the gun at Leo, and I knew that she was going to try and shoot.

“Katarina.” Leo knew the same thing. I felt tears streaming down my face. I had finally found happiness, and my mother was here to try and take it away.

Once more, I heard the sound of the gunshot before I processed what was happening. I expected to feel a bullet slicing through me, but instead, I heard Maddy scream.

I opened my eyes, and my mother was on the floor. Dead. Blood was streaming out of a bullet wound in her chest staining the oriental carpet my grandmother brought over from Russia.

“I figured one of us should shut her up,” Isaac said. He put his gun back in his holster, and I felt my mouth drop slightly as I tried to control my breathing. “She was a nuisance.” There was a carelessness to his voice that made me fearful.

Gone was the nice guy act, and the true Isaac was standing there emotionless over the fact that he just killed my mother.

There was too much going on. People were screaming and crying, and I swore that I heard sirens in the background. I felt hands on my shoulders, but I could not take my eyes off my father.

When Leo and I came for dinner, I thought that we would be announcing a fake engagement, but instead, I was an orphan.

My father’s eyes looked at me, and I swore that there was an accusation in his eyes. For years, I wanted nothing more than for my father to die, but now, I would give anything for him to breathe again.

In the span of just a few hours, life had changed, and I knew it was not going to be for the better.
