“So they’re poly?”

I threw my hands up in the air. “¡Joder! How am I the only person that didn’t know this was a thing?” I paused my tirade, letting my eyes narrow as I studied Bernard’s stoic face. “Wait, how doyouknow?”

“I dated two married men for a while.”

“Bernard, to puta.”

“You’re sounding a little unsure about it.”

“Can I have fuzzy feelings about a man that isn’t mine?” It sounded foolish to say it out loud. It was like I was a child again learning about relationships from the big kids.

“If a man said you were his, what would you say?”

“I don’t belong to anybody.”

“What were you asking Griffin about Sebastian moving in?”

I grumbled. “How can one person be your everything?”

“Karma owed you a favor and the universe delivered.”

Dammit. Bernard had a point.

The sculpture had a taunting quality, as if it knew I was thinking about my legs wrapped around Theo. He had buried his face against the back of my neck with his hand snaked around my chest. His breathing had turned to snoring, quiet, but enough I knew he’d fallen asleep. Much like the art, I wanted to find myself tangled with the man. At the bottom, I caught the artist’s name and the title. It was the sign I needed.

“Comfort in his arms,” I whispered.

Bernard grabbed me about the waist, pulling me close enough that I had to hold onto him. Resting my head on his shoulder, I wanted to kiss his cheek and say thank you. But with Bernard, you didn’t need to voice the words. His eyes always held a shimmer that said he knew his worth. I envied him and the way he walked through life with such certainty.

“What about you, Mr. Castle? Is there a man?”

“Once upon a time.”

Bernard never talked about the men he was dating. He spoke openly about every aspect of his life that I assumed there wasn’t anybody. Even Xander shrugged when asked. I was ready to jump and click my heels as I shoved aside my insecurities, and I wanted the same for him.

“The one that got away?”

“Something like that,” he said, neither confirming nor denying.

“I think it’s time to fix that.”

“Maybe.”

“If karma owes me a favor, it’s in your debt, Papi. The whole city is.”

“Why do you—” Bernard leaned back, studying my face. There were many times when he’d shoot me a curious glance when one of my stories got too outlandish for even him. But this time, he attempted to take inventory. I made sure my eyebrow rose far enough that it bordered on comical. He had opened the door for this conversation and I was going to push my luck.

“You—“

“Yup.”

“How?”

“Doesn’t matter.”

He scowled.

“We’re going to need to talk.” He had broken out the dad voice.
