I should have walked away, but I couldn’t help but stare at the full beard wrapping around his chin. His chest was wide enough, so I wasn’t sure I could reach around him with my arms. This husky do-gooder wanted to save me. Perhaps I should think of it as more of an opportunity and less of an annoyance.

“Are you going to sulk if I say no?”

“Dude, the rest of the heroes at central command would make so much fun of me. You don’t want to be why my photo winds up on the wall of shame.” Did he just bat his eyes at me? Was I being seduced into being rescued?

The car groaned as the woman freed herself. Her scream filled the alley, and whatever was about to happen between this hero and his foe, I didn’t want to be present. I reached out, grabbed his hand and with a swift jerk, he pulled me to my feet.

“Fine, you can save me.”

He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me tightly against his body. Any protests I had vanished as his hand rested in the small of my back. With only inches between our faces, I resisted the urge to kiss him. If I made it out alive, thenhe’d get to kiss the damsel in distress. Right now, I wasn’t entirely sure he—

Leaning backward, he dragged me along, and I tensed, preparing to thump against the pavement again. Despite falling, there was no impact. I opened my eyes to see we were standing upright amidst a strong breeze.

“Where are…” Somehow, we were standing on top of one of the taller buildings in the Ward. Behind my savior, a ring of glowing light revealed an image of the alley. Teleportation. That was a new one for me. My mind went to the gutter, trying to imagine how that could turn into a fun time in the bedroom.

“Hate to save and scurry, but I should finish beating her to a pulp.”

I was about to protest when he fell downward. I looked to the rooftop to see another circular portal where he had been standing. He had teleported himself back into the alley to stop the woman. Before I could argue, both portals shut, and I was left alone.

“Well, at least I’m alive.”

I made my way to the door leading to the stairs down through the building. As I tugged on the handle, it refused to open. I pulled with all my might, but it wasn’t enough to pry the door open. In a fit of rage, I pounded on the metal before giving it a swift kick.

“Alive,” I grumbled, “and late for work.”

“How the hell is ‘thick with a body I want climbing on top of me’ not a valid description? ¡No mames!”

Griffin was the last person I dared call to tell them someone trapped me on a roof. Bernard hadn’t picked up his phone and Xander must be on a call. They’d have been more practical in their advice of getting free. But no, I got stuck with Griffin, who only cared about identifying the superhero who abandoned me on the roof.

“Nope. I checked, nobody listed as ‘Hero Alejandro wants to bang.’ How did you wind up on the roof, anyway? Is this going to be some weird sex thing?”

I needed to work on my reputation. Or maybe I just needed to stop telling them all the times I couldn’t wait until I got home to undress a hero. “He teleported me up here. He was trying to get me away from the snake woman.”

“Female snake? Or half snake, half woman?”

“The second.”

“Nagatine. That’s an easy one.”

“You’re lucky Sebastian thinks you're cute.”

I banged the back of my head against the door again. In the movies, there would be a broom or metal pole I could use to pry the door open. How come I was on the cleanest roof in all of Vanguard City?

I’m sure Scarlet would understand. Everybody at the club had been kidnapped at least once since working there. I’m not sure if the Villain Pay Protection act would extend to being rescued by a hero. Great, another night of crappy pay.

I’d play his game. “Broad. Teleporter. Suit was dark pants, impressive bulge. The chest was like mirrors, I think?”

“Locator?”

I shook my head. “No, he had both arms.”

“Shifter?”

“Nope. He didn’t blink in and out. It was more like a portal.”

“Oh, maybe he’s in the portal category.”
