Page 6 of Iridescent Lust

Really? Were there that many heroes that they had to differentiate between teleport and portal? I almost said something, but I remembered two women arguing about the technical aspects of their power. One could summon fire, and the other made objects combust and created fire. Both were fire-wielding heroes, but to them, they might as well have been from different planets. Ironic, because neither of them was from Earth.

“Was he hot?”

There were several ways to reach the definition of hot. The most obvious is, were they the perfect blend of muscle and soft padding? I preferred the term huskular, but I’d also check out a guy who identified as a dad bod, chunky, chubby, bearish, or even barrel-chested. I needed a bit of charm, the ability to converse with a bit of sass. Lastly, was the good-guy meter. A bad boy might get my attention for a moment, but I didn’t need trouble. I could find that all on my own. Husky, charming, and a good guy. Dammit, he was hot.

“Very hot.”

Griffin went silent for a few seconds. “My hot, or your hot?”

“Whoa, shots fired.”

“I’m not one to judge.”

I brought the phone close to my lips. “Griffin Smith, I am going to reach through this phone and strangle you.”

There was a long pause before I growled. “He washot.”

“EO.”

“Excuse me?”

“That’s the teleporter’s name. Unless you’re into the busty ladies.”

I might be down for some unusual bedroom activities, but they all required a penis. I bet EO’s package was impressive out of his suit. He didn’t strike me as a hero who wore an athletic cup to increase their underwear profile. The more I thought about it, the further into the fantasy of his rescue I fell.

“Alejandro, come back to me.”

“Sorry, I was daydreaming.”

“Any luck getting off the roof?” Now that he had solved the riddle, Griffin could focus on the actual issue at hand.

“There’s nothing up here. I already threw myself against the door once. It’s not budging. You’re going to need to come and rescue me.”

The sun was nearly gone now and the city lights had come to life. It was going to be a cold evening if I couldn’t get down from here. I hated to make him travel across the city, but it looked like my hero wasn’t returning to sweep me off my feet.

“Did you look for a key?”

“It’s not like there’s a key in the handle.”

“Writers go on the roof of the Beacon all the time to smoke. Check around the top of the door.”

I leaned my head back, annoyed at the possibility of such a straightforward solution. It was hard to see in the dim light, but the door had a thick frame around it. I rolled over and clamored to my feet before running my fingers along the top. I froze as I grazed something.

“Dammit.”

“No luck?” Griffin asked.

“Not that. You were right.” The key in front of my face was barely visible. I had to resist the urge to hurl it off the side of the building. I could have been on my way to work if I had used my head instead of trying to bust the door down. Okay, perhaps calling Griffin hadn’t been a complete waste.

“You’ll be picking up my tab at breakfast.”

I growled. “Fine.”

“Have a good night at work.” Before I could offer a snotty reply, he’d hung up. Sometimes I wanted to slap him. Okay, truth be told, I always wanted to slap him, but I’d consider him the second hero to save me tonight.

I unlocked the door and with a grinding pull, I could see the stairwell leading down. With a quick glance over the shoulder, it made me sad EO hadn’t returned to whisk me away. I’d peel the suit off his body. It was the right thing to do after he risked his life to protect me. Maybe someday I’d get to return the favor.

For now, work called.
