“No crying. You’ll mess up your makeup,” Scarlet smiled.
I laughed, “I never thought this would be me. Can you believe it, Scarlet?”
“No. Actually I cannot.”
I laughed at her, but I’m not surprised.
“I imagined no one would get through Fort Stella.”
“Fort Stella, you all drove me crazy with that.”
“How did he do it?”
“He whispered in my ear.”
She laughed, “Wow.”
We glance at each other as we hear a knock at the door. Scarlet opens it and it’s Paul. He walks over to me and hugs me.
“You look stunning, Stella.”
I beam at him.
“Did you see Jamie?” I asked.
“I did. He’s excited.”
“I can’t believe I’m getting married.”
“Are you getting cold feet?”
I shake my head, “No. I’ve never been more sure of anything in my entire life.”
“Fort Stella getting married. I knew you’d fall in love one day. But this I didn’t see.”
I giggle.
“Jamie’s a good man, Stella. You chose well. He loves you so much.”
“Did he send you here? To check on my feet?”
He chuckles.
“No. I came to offer to walk you down the aisle.”
I threw my arms around him as tears stung the back of my eyes.
“Thank you Paul. That would mean the world to me.”
“I need to put my bracelet on that Jamie gave me,” after my bracelet is on, I’m ready.
“Let’s go get you married,” Scarlet says.
I smile. I’m so excited to see Jamie, to become his wife. There’s nothing I want more.
Scarlet helps me into the elevator with my short train. She turns her back to the buttons. She blushes and avoids eye contact with me, as if she has something to hide.
“Scarlet. What are you up to?”
