An hour later, there’s a knock at my door. I open the door to find Chase standing in front of me.
“Chase, why are you here? You know you can’t just show up at my door.”
“Can I come in so we can talk?”
Talking… it’s not a rule, but it’s definitely something I don’t like to do.
“I’m working. You have ten minutes.”
He sits on the chair that I straddled Jamie on and I instantly am turned on.
“Is your boyfriend gone?”
“Chase, you know damn well he’s not my boyfriend.”
“Well, he stayed the night and kissed you. Two things I’ve never been permitted to do.”
“I don’t feel the need to explain my choices to you, but yes, he left.”
I sit on the cream-colored microfiber couch a few feet away from Chase.
He moves to sit beside me. I turn to look at him, wondering why he moved. Taking my face in his hands, he moves his lips to mine. I parted my lips, accepting his kiss as an experiment. It’s nothing like Jamie. I feel his tongue mingling with mine. It’s not exciting, it’s not a turn-on. It’s lacking, seriously, lacking.
Pulling away I say, “Chase, no.”
He gives me a devastating look.
“You really feel nothing for me.”
“I’m sorry. You should go. I can’t see you anymore.”
“The rule,” he says.
“Yes. We can’t go on once you have feelings.”
“I’m in love with you, Stella.”
I say, “I know. I’m sorry.”
He gets up and leaves, looking at me like a boy whose dog just died.
After finishing my book, I send it to the editor that I’ve been working with for five years. Lisa is the best editor I’ve worked with. It’s a collaboration, really. We are in sync. I can’t imagine writing a novel without her being involved.
I hear my phone ping, and I am really hoping it isn’t Chase.
From: Jamie… What are you wearing?
To: Jamie… Perve.
From: Jamie… Answer me.
To: Jamie…A black dress. I’m going out tonight.
From: Jamie… With Chase?
To: Jamie… No.
Another knock at the door. If this is Chase again, I’m going to seriously lose it. I’ve told him it was just sex, and I meant it.
