“You said you have sex. You fuck with rules. No intimacy. I’m not asking you to marry me. It’s just dinner.”
“No kissing. No staying.”
He shakes his head, “I’m not playing by your fucked up rules. I’m not planning it out. Whatever happens beyond dinner happens, naturally.”
“I need to follow my rules.”
“Stella, just one night. No rules.”
“I can’t.”
“One night Stella. No fucking rules. After that, I’ll play by your rules or leave you alone.”
“Fine.”
What am I doing? Why am I agreeing to him bending or breaking my rules?
I get out and go into my publisher’s building. I’ve never been so thrilled to not be in a cab. That man is far too intense and sexy. Walking through the door, I feel him behind me. Every hair on my body stands up. My Publisher, Drew, comes out of his office and hugs me, spinning me around. I see the look on Jamie’s face. He’s not pleased. I smile at him as Drew releases me.
Drew asks, “Dinner tonight?”
I shake my head, “No, Drew.”
He says, “One of these days you’ll say yes.”
Jamie’s lips turn into a radiant smile. This is a game he wants to win. I’m the game he wants to win.
I said yes to him, although I’m still unsure why. Clearly, he’s pleased with himself.
He looks like a little boy that finally got the toy he’s been asking for. I want to be his toy.
I went into Drew’s office for our meeting.
“Where are we with book two?”
“It’s not finished. I’m about five or six chapters away, and then editing, of course.”
“Good. I’d like it published asap.”
I sighed, “It still has to go to editors. It’ll be at least three months before it’s ready.”
“Stella, three months tops.”
“Okay, I’ll do my best.”
“I don’t want your best. I want it done.”
I let out an annoyed sigh, “Is that all, Drew?”
He stands up and walks over to the chair I’m sitting in. Drew put his hands on each side of the chair, hovering over me. I could feel his hot breath on my face. I haven’t been this uncomfortable in a long time.
“Stella, have drinks with me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t date.”
