“Jamie.”

He kisses me and I try to push him away.

It’s like a drug addict being handed their drug of choice. I take my hit even though I know I shouldn’t. Even though I know I’ll regret it. Even though I know it’ll further destroy me.

His mouth is devouring me, he has his hands in my hair, moaning and pulling, kissing me like he knows I’m going to tell him never again. It’s as if we are the only two people on this busy street. I hear the whistles and comments, but there is no one else in this world at this moment. I finally got the strength to pull away.

“I’m sorry for running into you. I should pay more attention but I have to go.”

“Stella, I miss you.”

“I know.” I push away and head into my publisher’s office, and Drew is waiting for me.

“That was quite the show Stella.”

He must have seen us outside his window that faces the street.

“Sorry.”

“Here’s book two for you,’’ I said.

“Are you okay Stella?”

“No, but I will be.”

“Have you two been writing?”

“Yes.”

I lied, but what more can I do? I honestly don’t think we’ll ever finish it.

“I have to go but I’ll keep you updated.”

“Bye Stella.”

I must look like shit because that’s the first time he’s ever not asked me out.

Walking out the door, I ordered my cab. I need to just get out of here.

Jamie is waiting outside, “Stella, can we talk?”

“You said quite enough to me. There’s nothing left to say. I’m done, Jamie. I’m sorry it didn’t work out. I really loved you. It hurts, but it’s for the best.”

“Loved? Past tense?” he said.

“Present tense. This just can’t work. It’s over, Jamie.”

A tear runs down his face, which kills me, “Stella, don’t do this. I’m sorry.”

“You’re telling me not to do this? You fucking did Jamie. You. How many second chances do you think you should get?”

“Stella, I love you. Please, can we just talk?”

“Jamie I’m done. When I’ve moved on I’ve moved on.”

“You have someone else.”

“I don’t, but that’s not any of your business now.”
