“I don’t have my laptop,” I said.
“I’ll pull it up on mine.”
We spend the afternoon writing, knowing what it means. It means the end of our time here together. The thought is paralyzing. We’ll see each other frequently, but God, two weeks is going to feel like an eternity.
Seventeen
CHAPTER 17
Jamie comes out of the bedroom as I press send. I look at him as tears stream from my eyes.
“You sent it to the editor?”
“Yes, it’s done. She’ll have it done quickly, you know that.”
“It’s been a pleasure writing with you, Stella.”
“Yeah. Normally I celebrate finishing a book. It’s normally so exciting.”
“I know, baby, me too. Stella, I have to tell you something.”
“What?”
“I have to get back to California. Drew booked signings for me there.”
“What? When?”
“I have to leave tonight.”
“We have a publicity party tonight.”
“Drew decided the signings were more important for me to attend.”
“Jamie, this doesn’t make any sense.”
“Last night was our last night together? I thought we’d have at least one more night, Jamie.”
The tears flow relentlessly.
“Baby, I’m sorry. I don’t want to go.”
Putting my face in my hands, I realize this is it. Can I really do this? Every time I leave him, I’m going to fall apart all over again.
“Come with me, Stella.”
“I can’t Jamie. I have book signings here and in New York in a few days.”
“This is it, isn’t it Stella? You will not try.”
“I don’t think I can handle this, Jamie. Every time is going to break my heart.”
“Stella, fuck. I need you.”
“I love you Jamie, I really do. I’m just not strong enough.”
“I have a few hours. Will you stay with me?”
“Yes.”
