If he’d just told Ian the truth, that Sam was his mate, then Ian wouldn’t have sent them. Jesse wouldn’t have stored his help forty minutes away, which wouldn’t help him if he needed them. Clearly he hadn’t been thinking straight.

Something had to give. Jesse felt on edge all the time now. His wolf was restless and snarling. He also stayed hard around the slim demon. Jesse actually felt as if he would lose his mind if he didn’t claim Sam.

He watched as Sam pulled out a three-step stepstool to stack some boxes overhead on the shelf. Jesse’s gaze swept over his back, to the indent of his waist, and over the swell of his ass, where his eyes paused, then down his short, slim legs. Gloria had been right. With the way Jesse was feeling, the entire store should have burned down. Many wicked thoughts shot through Jesse’s mind until he saw Sam taking a step down. His mate lost his footing. He reached for the bar on the back of the stepstool, but his hand missed.

Sam let out a squeak as he fell backward. Jesse was across the store in a flash, grabbing his mate before he hit the floor. Sam landed in Jesse’s arms, gripping him tightly as he looked around wide-eyed.

“Good save,” Sam said while panting.

Jesse just held his firm body, unable to look away. His fingers dug into Sam’ s back, the heat sizzing between them. “You have to be more careful.”

Sam swallowed and nodded, still clinging to Jesse. That was when he realized Sam was still bent backward, unable to get up unless Jesse pulled him up. He didn’t want to but forced himself to help Sam right himself.

“Baby!”

Jesse’s head snapped sideways at the shrill sound coming from across the room. He started to reach for his hidden gun until Sam chuckled from beside him. “I guess they’re on again. That’s Terry, Gloria’s boyfriend.”

The guy who’d walked in was tall and lean, with short brown hair and wearing a huge smile as he folded Gloria into his arms.

Jealousy ripped through Jesse because he wanted to fold Sam into his. He wanted that look of utter happiness on Gloria’s face to be on Sam’s. Jesse’s main reason for not claiming Sam was because he wanted to stay focused on the job, to keep a clear head, but that wasn’t working out the way he wanted it to. If anything, his focus was shot to hell every time his mate was close because all Jesse could think about was bending the guy over a flat surface and…

Stop thinking about that.

It seemed when Jesse’s dick got involved, his brain went on hiatus.

“Sammy!” Terry smiled as he walked over. He reached for Sam, and Jesse wanted to rip that hand off. The guy gave Sam a quick hug before releasing him. “How are things going?”

Gloria looked as if she was on cloud nine as she stood behind her boyfriend, grinning like crazy. Okay, so Jesse wouldn’t neuter the man for touching Sam because he didn’t want to upset her. Even if Jesse’s wolf didn’t give a shit.

“Good.” Sam took a step back. “How was your visit home?”

Gloria made an irritated noise in the back of her throat, and Terry grimaced. Jesse had no idea what that was about. “Good, just glad to be back with my girl.”

Terry looked adoringly at Gloria, and she shivered.

“We should go out to dinner after I spend some time with Gloria,” Terry said. “Just the three of us. It’s been a while since we’ve done that.”

“Maybe.” Sam smiled. “But I wouldn’t want to take you away from Gloria anytime soon. She just might wring my neck.”

Terry gave an easy chuckle. “She just might, but we seriously should go out and catch up. There’s a new Italian restaurant I’ve been dying to go to. You could even bring a date with you.”

Jesse suppressed a growl, though he was pretty sure he was giving off menacing vibes.

“This is Jesse Hart,” Sam said to Terry as he waved a hand at Jesse.”

“Sammy’s new bodyguard,” Gloria purred.

Terry looked Jesse over then looked back at Sam. “Just think about my offer.”

What a dick, though bodyguards were normally ignored. Jesse was surprised Sam had even introduced him but was glad he had, because Jesse was feeling very territorial right now.

“I’ll think about it.” Sam chuckled. “You two go. I know you’re dying to get out of here.”

Gloria squealed and kissed Sam’s cheek. Although Jesse knew Gloria was male, his wolf didn’t react to her kissing their mate, but it did want to bite Terry’s junk for touching Sam and suggesting Sam bring a date to dinner. Sam might not know it yet, but his dating days were over.

Gloria grabbed her enormous handbag from behind the counter and hurried out the door with Terry in tow.

“Glad your friends didn’t come in today,” Sam said as he stared at the door. “I told her you had out-of-town visitors, and Gloria insisted on meeting them.”
