“They’re around.” Knox and Fletch were close by. None of them wanted another attempted abduction.

Sam looked at him. “Then they have to be outside because I don’t smell them. Why don’t I close up for lunch, and all four of us can go eat?”

“Sam.” Jesse scrubbed a hand over his jaw. “That’s not a good idea.”

Not when Jesse felt feral. Keeping Sam at arm’s length was getting harder and harder. Jesse felt like he was going crazy, and he just might be. He wanted Sam with an urgency that bordered on madness. The thought of Sam sitting at a table, laughing and talking with other males, had Jesse’s wolf ready to attack.

After their two-week honeymoon period was over, Jesse would calm down. He wouldn’t mind taking all three out to dinner. But until then, that wasn’t happening.

“Why?” Sam’s brows furrowed. “Your boss sent them to help out. Why can’t they be near me? Don’t think I didn’t notice their bags gone when we left this morning.”

This was getting too damn complicated, and Jesse was tired of being so evasive. He knew all the reasons he should keep his mouth shut, but both he and his wolf were getting more and more edgy. If Jesse was to keep his sanity intact, he needed to tell Sam why being around males wasn’t a good idea.

“They can’t be near you because my wolf wants to dine on their throats.” Way to scare the guy.

“I still don’t understand.”

Jesse let out a frustrated breath. Fuck it. “Because you’re my mate, Sam.”

Chapter Six

So many thoughts shot through Sam’s head at the same time. He’d heard the conversation when Jesse’s boss had asked if Sam was his mate, but Sam had dismissed that because of the way Jesse had acted toward him.

Now? Sam wasn’t sure what to think. He was mated to a wolf. Oh god, his father was going to go nuclear over this! But Sam had no control over who fate had handpicked for him. His brothers Drake and Anton were mated, to women, but both were demons, wholly accepted into their family.

Why couldn’t Sam’s life be normal? Why did he have to be the odd duckling all the time? Born with no powers, someone trying desperately to abduct him, and now his mate was a shifter.

“Sam.” Jesse touched his shoulder. “Breathe, baby.”

“I am breathing,” Sam argued. Heavily, but he was breathing.

“Is it because I’m a wolf?” Jesse’s blue eyes were guarded as he eased his hand away from him. Sam instantly missed that touch, the connection, and wanted it back.

He was tired of letting his father think for him. Malcolm had poisoned Sam’s mind against shifters, and it wasn’t fair to condemn an entire species because Malcolm had more than likely come across a bad apple. Things had been different five hundred years ago. That was how long Malcolm had been disparaging their kind. It had been a different era, and Sam wasn’t going to let his father’s way of thinking ruin something that should be special to Sam.

His mating.

“No.” He looked up at Jesse. “Is that why you rejected me this morning, because—” Sam frowned. “Why did you reject me if we’re mates?”

Jesse placed his hands back on Sam’s arms, and Sam loved feeling that connection again. Now he knew it hadn’t been just lust when it came to Jesse. Now he knew why he was insanely attracted to the guy. “Because your father forbids it. Because my boss forbids it. Because I wanted to stay focused on the job, but god, I can’t stay focused, not like I should. Not when you’re near and all I want to do is take you back to the safe house and bury my dick deep inside of you.”

“You’re so blunt.” Sam’s heart quickened, and his cock hardened. The tips of his ears were burning because he’d never had anyone talk to him that way. Not even Brett. Oh, the guy had said he wanted to tie Sam up and whip him, but this was different. From his past experiences with Brett, the guy had been out for himself, his pleasures, his wants. It had never been about Sam.

Jesse smiled down at him. “I know what I want, and I’m not going to hold back now that you know what we are to each other.” He cupped Sam’s face. “I see the worry in your eyes, Sam. I won’t push you for more than you’re ready to give.”

How did Jesse know what Sam was thinking? He hadn’t even formed the worry in his head, yet Jesse had guessed it with no problem.

“You’d want me even if I’m vanilla?”

Jesse rolled his eyes. “I hate that term. Just because you don’t want to push boundaries doesn’t make you a dull sex partner. Not everyone is Brett. Trust me when I tell you that I’ll be fucking thrilled just being with you.”

Sam couldn’t recall anyone ever saying that to him. Thrilled to be with him? Nope, Jesse was the first person. Considering how old Sam was, that was kind of pathetic.

His mate backed him against the wall, grinning, surrounding Sam with his hard body. “How opposed are you to the idea of closing shop and heading home?”

A spike of adrenaline shot through Sam, making him tremble. He wasn’t opposed, but what he really wanted was another kiss. His gaze kept dropping to Jesse’s plump lips. He licked his own, his gaze swinging up to Jesse’s, but the door opened and customers walked in.

Sam let go of a silent curse as he pulled away from his mate. Jesse let out a deep breath, as if trying to pull in some control as Sam turned to wait on the people who’d just entered.
