Maddock huffed. “We are far more than shifters.”

His yellow piercing eyes made bumps form on her skin.

Steele’s eyes roamed her body. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dannika. I sincerely hope you survive the trials.”

While Maddock’s face held open disdain, Steele’s held obvious interest. While Dannika had never considered herself attractive, she would use anything to gain freedom.

“If you’re concerned about my safety, then skip the trial and let me go. It’s not like either of you has the right to dictate my life.”

Maddock stepped up to her. “At the moment, you have no life, no rights. Unless you prove you’re not a reaper.”

She tipped her chin up to meet Maddock’s fiery gaze. “I’m not a reaper.” She held up her hands. “Look, Dad, no claws.”

Maddock growled. “Your insubordination will get you killed.”

“I’m not a fucking soldier,” she snapped.

Raine stepped between them. “She is a fledgling, Maddock. She is unaware of the rules that govern our world. Threatening her makes you look weak.”

Maddock glanced at the men who stood watching them. “Then I suggest you train her.” He looked her over. “Or kill her.”

Steele’s eyes flickered with amber. “She will take the trial. Ryder is on his way. If you kill her, you start a clan war.”

She glanced between the angry men. “Who is Ryder?”

Raine put a hand on her back. The action was soothing and warm. Since she wanted neither, she shrugged his hand away.

“He is the bear clan leader,” Raine said.

In the center of the field, clan members had made a circle. A living ring that would decide her fate.

“Let’s get this over with.” She pulled off her shirt, exposing her black sports bra.

Raine’s eyes flickered with blue fire. “We do not require you to undress.”

She huffed. “You wish. My shirt is too baggy to fight in. I wouldn’t want you to have something to grab hold of.”

Raine pulled off his shirt. His ripped torso was tanned and perfect. Every ab was clearly defined and the epitome of a male Adonis. The image of her licking his body, tasting his skin, made her look away.

“I wouldn’t want you to have something to grab hold of,” he said with an easy grin.

Dannika grew up on the streets. This was not her first deathmatch.

She glanced between his legs. “Removing your shirt won’t help you. I have something to grab hold of and it’s gonna hurt.”

Several of the nearby men chuckled, but Raine did not.

He waved his fingers, gesturing her forward. “Show me what you got.”

Dannika smiled at him. “I didn’t start this shit show. You did. You want something, you come and take it.”

Steele chuckled. “I like this woman.”

Raine growled at her. “This is not a joke. Your life hangs in the balance.”

Dannika swirled a piece of hair around her finger. “Says you. I don’t recognize your authority. I’m a prisoner, but after I kick your ass, I plan to leave.”

“If you can beat me in a fight, you are free to leave,” Raine said.
