Raine solidified into his human form. “You are still thinking like a human. You control your shadow warrior on a molecular level. Your stunt earlier, while juvenile, proves you have control over your form.”

Her eyes flashed green before she resumed her human form. “Excuse me if I take over five minutes to adjust to not being human.”

Maddock motioned another clan member to join him. “She’s a sorry excuse for a shadow wolf. Toughen her up, if you expect her to survive.”

The animal inside her bristled beneath her skin. Fur rippled down her spine before resuming its human form.

“You may wish to teach her some restraint before one of her outbursts gets her killed,” Maddock said.

Dannika huffed. “I think you’re an ass. If anyone needs to learn restraint it’s you.”

Maddock’s eyes narrowed as all conversation surrounding them ceased. “Do you wish to challenge me, fledgling? You have the right.”

She shook her head. “I’m like a kitten in your world. I know that. Will it really bring you so much joy to kill me?”

“Possibly,” Maddock said.

“I can’t win, but I’m tired of your smartass comments. Did you do this to Raine too when he went through transition, or am I special?”

“Raine was a child when he transitioned. His body had to mature before he could complete his training, and the pain he went through, as a result, is beyond your imagination. Do not expect me to give you the leeway Raine had. He was the youngest ever to survive the transition. He is a miracle. You are a curse.”

Dannika put her hand on her hip. “Do you ever tire of listening to yourself? You realize you repeat yourself... often. I’m told that it happens as you get older.”

Raine put his hand on her shoulder. “Stop this. Like it or not, Maddock is our leader.”

She shrugged off his hand. “He is no respect for women. Why should I have any respect for him?”

Maddock smiled. “Why don’t you do something about it?”

She cracked her knuckles. A habit she thought she’d broken. “What kind of pussy is threatened by a woman going through transition? You wanted Raine to murder me. I’m standing here, so tell me how you can be sure those other women wouldn’t have survived if you killed them before they had a chance. As far as I can tell, you are no better than a serial killer.”

“Dammit, Dannika,” Raine snapped.

Maddock’s body rippled before his shadow warrior exploded with black mist burning off his body like dark fire. “Your disrespect will get you killed.”

Dannika pretended to yawn. “You keep repeating yourself. Any chance you suffer from—”

With a growl, Maddock pushed the clan member he’d been talking to out of the way, advancing on Dannika.

CHAPTER14

Raine stepped in front of Dannika. Maddock slammed into him, and he stumbled backward, knocking Dannika to the ground. She rose with clenched fists.

“I don’t need you to protect me,” she hissed.

Raine glanced at her. Black mist rolled off his alpha warrior in waves of black fire. They flicked and curled like tiny whips in tune with his anger. “You have no idea what you need.”

Maddock’s eyes flared. “She needs discipline. I will not tolerate her lack of respect.”

Raine’s eyes narrowed on his leader. His tone dropped low, menacing. “Surely, an alpha is not threatened by a fledgling.”

“She has no value to the clan if she can’t respect our rules.”

“Respect our rules, or respect you?” Raine growled.

Maddock’s lip twitched. “It’s the same thing.”

“Hardly.”
