Dusk fell over the twinkling clearing, making it appear more ethereal. Something out of a fairy tale. “I do, but I always imagined Jacob walking me down the aisle after Lori and I spent the day getting our hair and makeup done together. It was a child’s daydream. One I had forgotten until I met you.”

Raine signed the words,I love you. “Lori taught you sign language. That’s a gift I will never take for granted.”

Dannika took Raine’s hand and led him back to the caves. “Me either.”

They had barely made it inside their bedroom when their shadows mixed. He pulled her to him. The caress on her skin when he slipped his hand beneath her shirt was soft, comforting, but the low rumble in his chest turned it into something more.

Dannika pulled him closer. Their shadows reached for one another as their emotions collided, heightening every sensation. His hair slid along her cheek as she nipped his ear. The whispering sensation sent an erotic fire racing through her blood. He slid his hands to her breasts, rolling an erect nipple between his fingers before tracing down her ribs and along her belly.

Every stroke left a firestorm in its wake, a dark hunger that needed to be sated. She wanted to scream for relief, but the air caught in her throat when his hand moved lower. A promise of pleasure. Heat scorched her bloodstream. She always wanted him, but this was a craving beyond any other. The awareness inside her clawed to get to the darkness that surrounded him. His power.

It mixed with hers, shrouding them both. She kissed him, craving the darkness that surrounded both of them. The taste of copper seared her tongue as she bit his lip. His growls vibrated in her mouth.

“Take off your clothes.” His voice was barely human.

Dannika snapped her teeth together. It wasn’t his arrogance or his confidence. She had become accustomed to his alpha when he was aroused. It was the rush of liquid between her legs that had her clamping her thighs together, attempting to maintain control.

The more their shadows combined, the more he could hurt her. He wouldn’t do it willingly, but their world, the shadow shifter world, was ferocious, and only the strong survived.

A year ago, she had been convinced she was on the top of the food chain. Now she felt like a kitten in the lion’s den. One wrong move and it would swallow her whole.

Raine stepped out of his pants. While he could shift his clothes to the shadows, he often chose a more human approach. Her gaze focused on his thick shaft as he glided his fingers over the pulsing head.

“Dannika.” A plea. A demand.

He grabbed her hand, wrapping it around the velvet spike, moving her hand under his until she continued on her own. The instinct to taste him was overwhelming. With their shadows connected, he knew what she wanted.

She knelt before him, her tongue darting out to lick the essence that formed at the tip. The dark elixir of a wild animal. It was all Raine, and he was hers. She sucked him deep into her throat, feeling his growls vibrate against her lips. There was nothing submissive about her actions. She was a conqueror. A queen. Every sensation, every emotional response, was hers to command. She reveled in her newfound power as she rolled her tongue over the crest of his cock, pulling him deeper into the haven of her mouth.

Raine clutched her hair, the sting an erotic reminder of her power.

“So good.” His words were clipped, hardly perceptible, as if he lacked the air to speak.

He tasted of darkness and freedom as his shadow reached out, surrounding her in a cloak of erotic fire, heightening her pleasure. Fire raced through her blood, amassing in her core. She raked his thighs with her fingernails, making him growl in satisfaction.

His eyes were iridescent blue pools, promising sin and seduction.

Her hand worked in tandem with her mouth, and his erection thickened.

He growled her name when she pushed him over the apex. She reveled in her ability to keep him on the edge of his control. To prove that she was the single being in the universe worthy of his devotion.

Raine pulled her up his body, kissing her with the taste of him on her lips. A decadent reminder that he was more animal than man.

He had his hand under her shirt, sliding over her breasts, when shouts echoed in the cave.

He tipped her chin up. “I have to go. Get Darren and go to the sanctuary. We can’t afford to lose him.”

Black mist dissolved around her. Raine’s shadow caressed her cheek before entering the pathway.

While she was adept at traveling the pathways on her own, she lacked the speed and agility of her mate. Still, she was a fighter, a warrior, and she would never let her clan down. Her molecules dissolved, followed by the familiar feeling of breaking bones and tearing flesh, as she shifted to her shadow form and entered the slipstream.

Darren’s room was close to her and Raine’s, making the trip quick. She tumbled from the pathway unceremoniously as if spit from the mouth of a gaping beast. She looked around the room after regaining her balance.

Darren’s small computer desk was littered with maps and pictures. His laptop sat open on a coffee table in front of a black leather couch. The suite was similar to Raine’s, with a living room and a bedroom, though senior shadows required little sleep. Darren, however, was young and still slept several hours a night.

She made her way to the bedroom. A glazed porcelain figurine had been scattered across the floor, leaving a trail of white powder in its wake.

She rubbed her palms on her pant legs, hoping to calm her uneasiness. Darren was inexperienced, but he was smart and had run this drill a hundred times. She prayed he’d made it to safety. Her body dissolved before she entered the pathway. She sprinted along the dark slipstream and emerged in the cavern that led to the sanctuary.
