“Um, I get paid more than you. My job dangers involved being bitten at regular intervals and outputting a frequency of energy that Yavor can eat.”

Iris was suddenly hugged, and Lily whispered, “There has to be a way to get you out of here.”

“Lily, don’t be stupid. We got off a dying world, and now there is nowhere to run. Be happy that we have food and the possibility of a future.” Iris stroked her sister’s hair. “The bondwas entered into voluntarily. There are a few ways for it to end, and they aren’t under my control.”

Lily started crying, and Iris held her as she had a hundred times since the end of the world. Her sister was tough, but when she cracked, it lasted.

A soft knock at the door preceded shadows walking in. “Lily? Are you upset?”

Lily tried to suck back her tears, and Iris murmured, “Idiot.”

Lily started laughing and wiped her cheeks. “Sorry, Arluth. I didn’t mean for anyone to see that.”

“Shedding tears is stress relief for your species. If you require stress relief, you may come to me.”

Lily went scarlet. Iris laughed as she could almost see the thought processes in her sister’s head.

Arluth asked, “Companion Irith, why has she changed colour?”

“There is a dual meaning to stress relief. Comfort or sexual activity. Which were you offering my sibling?”

Arluth turned toward her, and his shadows flared and snapped. “Whichever she wishes. I offer my assistance in either capacity.”

Lily went white, and Iris caught her as her knees buckled. Iris smiled. “She was not expecting that answer.”

“I will assist her and give her an exam. She looks ill.”

Iris smiled. “Interesting. Please, give her a dissertation on your people.”

Arluth chuckled. “It will not take long. I am the only one of my kind. I am the original inhabitant of Avor.”

He took custody of Lily, and Iris kissed her cheek. “I hope it is informative. Thank you, Arluth.”

He bowed slightly, and a wave of amusement came from him. “My pleasure, Lady Irith. She will come to no harm in my care.”

Lily’s eyes widened as she was led out of the room by the man made of flowing shadow. Iris thought it was a male anyway.

She sighed and sat down, pouring more tea and nibbling at the snacks. She was unsurprised to feel Yavor enter the room, pick her up off the chair she was on, and walk with her to the couch. He sat down and curled his wings around her. “I did not say anything to Arluth.”

She chuckled. “I know. He is an empath. He already knew. So, he offered to help Lily with stress relief because she was crying.”

He rubbed his chin on her head. “I heard. You are amused by it.”

“Stress relief is sex. Was sex. Meant sex.” She leaned against him. “I need a nap.”

He clucked to her. “You will not hide in sleep. Would you like to see the gardens?”

“Sure.”

Yavor nodded and said, “In a moment. It is very nice to feel you against me.”

Iris nodded. “Your wings are super soft.”

He wrapped his wings around her into a silky cocoon. She curled up against his chest and pressed her lips against his skin. He growled lightly. “Your sibling was upset.”

“She was dealing with instinct versus reality.”

“Explain.”
