Page 36 of Tearing the Sky

Yavor wrapped his wings around them both, and she was now in a soft and warm cocoon as they flew to the other city. It took an hour, and she hid her face when her eyes started tearing up.

The Hmrain kept her warm, and his body warmed the space he had created for her.

“Irith, look up. We are at the first city.”

She lifted her head, and her eyes widened. It looked like a fantasy city with tall spires, and in a distant area, shuttles landed and lifted off. There were huge birds landing on some of the buildings, and it was amazing to look at.

“Oh, wow.”

He whispered in her ear, “It was the jewel of this world until you arrived.”

“I am not a jewel. I am a piece of granite. Sturdy but with a thousand uses.”

Yavor wrapped his arms around her. “A polished piece of granite can be a jewel.”

He nibbled at her ear as they circled the city and then came in for a landing near the spaceport. Abet landed on a scarred-up landing area that showed dozens of claw marks.

Yavor lifted her and slid off Abet’s neck. She patted the bird, and they walked toward a shuttle with two officers waiting in a black and blue livery with purple metallic trim, similar to the outfit Iris was wearing but with more fabric.

A man came out, and there were a lot of ranking markings, but military designations were not something she had been interested in. She was surprised that he was Terran.

“Captain. Are we ready?”

“Yes, Lord Yavor.”

“This is my mate and companion, Lady Irith.” He kept his arm around her. “Irith, this is Captain Arthur.”

The captain bowed. “My lady.”

She inclined her head. “Captain.”

“The shuttle is ready. Please, come on board.”

Yavor kept his arm around her and escorted her onto the shuttle. She was ushered into a private room and settled into a seat with safety strapping and a viewscreen of the outside world.

“I will be right back, Irith.” He kissed her forehead before he left her alone.

She didn’t fidget, but she watched for him, and when he returned, he settled into his specially made seat. He offered his hand, and she clutched at his arm as they started tilting upward and heading skyward.

“You don’t like flying?”

“With you and Abet, fine. The last time I was in a shuttle, it was dropping into a storm, and the one before that was me seeing my broken home for the first time.”

“This is your home now.”

She smiled. “I know, but I lived my life there, and now I have to start over. It is a lot to deal with.”

“The life with me will be bright and long.”

“And you will live happily far after I am gone.”

He sighed. “I will, but if we have children, I will watch them grow and change and have their own children, and they will all know about you.”

“And my world? It may be broken by now, but it is still important.”

“They will know about your world. And it is likely that I will never find another companion. At least not one of your calibre.”

She sighed. “I don’t mean to be heavy, but nothing makes me feel emotionally vulnerable like passing through the troposphere. We are going to be going back, right?”
