They must have covered over two kilometres when two females in dark smocks came out of a business entry and bowed. “Lord Yavor, welcome back to the station.”

“The unit is prepared?”

“Yes, Lord Yavor.” The woman had dark green skin, gold eyes, and polished talons.

“Good. Take care of her. I will be back in four hours. Irith, just take a nap if you can. They will offer you a tablet, and you can look up what you will.” He leaned down and whispered an access code into her ear.

Iris nodded and turned her head to kiss him quickly. “Don’t forget me here.”

He smiled. “I wouldn’t dare. Behave, and I will take you for a more thorough tour of the station.”

“Fine. Go do overseer things. I will get my hair done. Oh, can I pick a colour?”

He looked at the ladies. “Dark blue and black.”

“Yes, Lord Yavor.”

Iris walked into the clutches of the salon staff and was urged to use the restroom before they started. Iris was shocked when she bumped into a familiar face in the hall. “Janessa!”

The woman with long brown hair grinned. “Iris! I heard you were out this way. How are you keeping?”

Iris hugged her friend from the education station. Another Terran in the middle of a station full of other species.

“Janessa, what the hell are you doing here?”

“Uh, I am getting my nails done.” Janessa’s green eyes were amused. “My bond holder likes his back scratched.”

“Bond...” She felt her eyes get wide. “You have a Hmrain.”

“Yeah, he’s banged to hell and back, but I have one. Or he has me. Or something. I got to spend some time as a pirate, so that was fun.”

“So, all that in two years?”

Janessa grinned. “Yeah. Sorry that you got frozen. Based on your hair, I am guessing you have been out less than a month?”

“Just over a week.”

“Ah, and based on the salon staff glaring at me, you are getting hair extensions?”

“Something like that.”

“Well, blue looks good on you, and your mark is coming along nicely.”

Iris blushed. “The blue is unexpected.”

“Oh, ho. It’s a side effect.” She paused and looked up. “We are on Yavor’s station. Is he your fly-boy?”

“Wow. I would not have put it that way.”

“Come on. Let’s get your head in the machine. If you let them clamp you in, we can keep chatting, and I can get my nails done at the same time.”

The salon staff smiled and nodded.

Iris and Janessa talked for an hour while her hair was slowly grafted, smoothed, and extruded into long, shining locks.

A growling shout got their attention. “Janessa!”

“Kethen! Stop yelling, you big twit!” Janessa snarled and flexed her fingers.
