“Ah.”

She nodded to him with a smile. “My name is also Iris.”

The captain smiled. “Pleased to meet you, Iris.”

“Perhaps it is better that you call me Irith to avoid confusion.”

He looked to Yavor. “Is it all right if this is known?”

Yavor cuddled her close and pressed a kiss to her temple. “What do you think? I just wanted you to know as she uses Terran phrasing that would eventually be noticed.”

Arthur’s eyes lit with understanding. “Got it. And the blue?”

“Is a very embarrassing situation, so let’s just consider this one of the effects of mating with this particular Hmrain.”

Teeth scraped along her neck, and she shivered.

She swallowed and ignored her body’s response.

Captain Arthur smiled. “How was the bond negotiation?”

“A little acrimonious, but we got it hammered out.”

“What did you argue about?” He grinned and ate a cookie.

Iris grimaced. “Punishment.”

“What?”

“We argued about the terms for punishment. I am a bit impulsive and now have to treat myself like an asset belonging to Yavor.”

The captain leaned back. “What kind of impulsive?”

“Fought a bear. Fought a Mnemack. Charged into a conclave and got some kidnapped girls out with an empty gun. Jumped a ravine. Fell off a cliff. Took a pony through the mountains.” She sat and ticked them off on her fingers.

Yavor murmured, “Shaved her head to make herself less attractive.”

“Oh, yeah. He’s really pissed about that one.” She smirked.

Yavor ran his fingers through her hair and tightened his grip. His fingers slipped out. “You see the problem?”

Captain Arthur looked a little uncomfortable. “Uh, yes, I think I do.”

She looked at Yavor. “You are creeping him out.”

“So?”

She paused. “Right. Not an issue for you.”

He gave a dark chuckle. “Absolutely not. It is my duty tocreep outthe species in bond to me. It maintains the balance of power.”

A chime rang. Arthur smiled. “We are docking.”

Yavor ran his hand along her scalp again, and he muttered. “Good. We are fixing this right away.”

Chapter Eight

They walked through the space station, and Iris stared at the unfamiliar species, some familiar ones, and some that considered Terrans as food. She was sticking close to Yavor for safety’s sake, but her eyes were taking in everything.
