“You are by association, Sergio. You make your money in my region, sometimes from my own pocket. I allow this because you’re one of us, you’re Italian, and you’re a good man. You can be trusted to deliver whenever someone needs you. That’s why I need you to deliver again…her to me.”

“No,” I say firmly in no uncertain terms, shaking my head. “This is different.”

“She’s not your wife, Sergio. You have no claim on her.”

“Not yet she’s not, but that’s going to change. Real fucking soon.”

Don De Luca leans back in his chair once again, obviously deciding if he’s going to say something about me using profanity aimed at him. He’s been known to kill for less, and the look in his eye tells me he’s contemplating it again.

Let him try. Let those two goons behind me monitoring his door try and stop me. If it wasn’t for Sapphire I’d grab the picture off his table right now and stab the end of the brass frame into the side of his neck, ending him.

Then I’d take my chances with his hired muscles. Odds that I’d take any day. They’re big oafs, goons that don’t think on their feet. He always hires that type, and always offers me five times their salary for me to join his team in their place.

Never, and especially not now. He needs to learn that he might be the biggest, baddest game in town but that doesn’t mean I can’t set up a shitstorm, set losing rival families in a war by ending his life whenever I want. And he knows it, unless he plans to kill me right now.

But he won’t. I’m too important and I’ve been too good to his family, which is why he needs to respect mine. He needs to understand it’s not just me anymore. It’s us, Sapphire and I.

“But you haven’t and I’m claiming her now. Now before you get a chance to.” He pauses as I narrow my eyes and ball my hands up into fists. I hear the men behind me unholster their weapons and Don De Luca waves them off. “Bring her to me. I will take care of her.”

“You are married Don De Luca, and you have your mistresses already. She’s better off with me and she’s mine already. I’m not negotiating.”

“Neither am I but a Saudi prince is. He’s offering top dollar for a blonde virgin just like her. Money we can use to—“

“Money you’ll never see from her or the sale of any other woman,” I grit out. “You never told me you’re dipping your hand in that pot. Now that I know any business dealings we have are done.”

“Sergio, don’t be so quick to pass judgment. I’m reserving my judgment of you right now just because you want that pussy so bad but you’ve yet to taste it.”

Lunging forward I jump over the desk, grabbing the old fuck by the neck with both hands as he reaches for the gun under the table. Spinning him I use his own hand to pull the trigger twice, killing both of his guards.

“Looks like it’s just me and you now, old man,” I say, overpowering him and bringing the tip of the gun to his temple. “You killed those men. Remember that. You pulled the trigger. And you could pull the trigger now, committing what would look like suicide, disgracing your family, everything you’ve worked for.”

“Let. Go,” he growls, but he’s not strong enough to stop whatever I choose to do next.

“Like I tried to tell you earlier, I’m in charge here, not you. You run your little territory however you wish, but you leave me and the girl out of it. You understand me, you human trafficking fuck?”

“You bring her to me by tomorrow, Sergio, or I do.”

“You just don’t get it, do you old man.”

I pry the cold, hard steel from his hands and pistol whip him in the face, tucking his gun in the front of my pants and show myself out.

As I leave his office I pass another set of guards who touch their ears and no doubt call back into the office. But by the time Don De Luca is able to get the earpieces out of the two men he killed, not me, it’s going to be too late.

Back on my Ducati I throw on my helmet and put distance between the two of us.

The old me would have finished him, and then the guards. But that would set off a war that would only kill a lot of innocent civilians.

For the first time in my life, I truly see how the chain reaction of these events unfolds. Maybe it’s because it’s the first time I’ve ever considered having a family, having a woman I wanted in my life forever.

And if I killed him the whole city would be looking for me, a big price on my head, even the rival families out to take me down despite common sense logic that they’d want to partner with me, reward me.

Not how it works. An unpredictable man is not a desirable man in this line of work. We’re a dying breed, and only getting smaller.

Which is why I need to be smart, stay safe, and more importantly, keep her safe. Get her to safety because she’s already been marked. She’s a target now and my responsibility to keep her safe just increased exponentially.

But once I get her safe I end Don De Luca, and the disgusting thing he’s involved himself in.

Men want to kill other men, that's one thing, something I have no malice toward. But when you involve innocent women and children? That’s something else entirely.
