Especially when that woman belongs to me.

I shift gears and hit the throttle. I’ve got someplace to be. Now.

Sapphire

The unmistakable sound of a motorcycle engine that can only belong to one person and one person only causes the windows of my dorm room to shake.

“What the…?” my roommate, Abby says out loud.

I squeeze my eyes tight as she runs toward the window, already knowing where this is going.

“Abby, we need to talk. Fast.”

“Wait. Oh my god, Saph, you need to see this guy on the bike. Quick. Quick!” She waves me over with her hand but as soon as I’m at the window he’s out of view.

From our second-floor perch, I hear the five heavy footfalls on the steps, which is scary considering he used two steps for the first five steps, one for the landing to pivot, then another two for five more steps.

One more step followed by three loud raps of knuckles on our hollow door tells me the beast has arrived.

“Oh my God.”

My body tenses as I pace, realizing the only thing standing between us is some hollow pine he could kick in or drop a shoulder into and annihilate as easily as he breathes.

“Wait. You know this guy?” she says, realizing I’m trying to come up with a plan.

“Open up or I’ll open it.”

“Shit. Shit. Shit,” I say under my breath. “Give me a second,” I say aloud.

“Who is he?’ Abby mouths.

I just shake my head, bringing a silencing finger to my lips, and against my best instincts go to the door, unlock it and open it slightly.

Almost immediately he’s pushing through as I stumble back. He grabs me so I don’t fall then looks left and right. “She the only one here?”

“We don’t count?”

“Not anymore. Listen, girl,” he says to my roommate. “Sapphire is taking a semester off. This is your room now.”

“What?” I gasp. “No fucking way.”

“You can’t do this to her,” Abby says, taking a step toward Sergio who quickly shoots daggers at her with his eyes, freezing her in his tracks. “I defer to the guest,” she adds, taking a step back.

“Defer by taking a hike, but only in the hall.”

She nods. “I’ll go play beer bong with the boys. Yell if you need anything.”

She gives me a hug and then moves toward the door, Sergio’s big immovable body blocking it so she quickly drops down and slides underneath his legs and out the door.

“Hey, where did everybody go?” she announces as Sergio kicks the door closed.

I know exactly what she’s talking about. There was laughter, beer pong, people eating pizza…normal stuff on a regular night in a college dorm room. Until Sergio rode onto our residence hall property.

“There are boys on this floor.”

“It’s co-ed,” I say, almost embarrassed.
