“Are you ready?” Drew yells up the stairs. Timothy and Jay are already waiting for us in the living room.

“Yeah, we are,” Hunter shouts back. It’s taken him about an hour to get me dressed.

“You’re sure you want to go to the beach?” he asks, holding the back of my head.

I nod. Even talking has become too much for me.

He puts my left arm in a black sling while I sit on the edge of the bed. The muscles in my other hand have started to atrophy as well. I hate this fucking disease. My brain still works, my thoughts are the same, but my body is dying.

Talking takes up too much energy. My days are spent sleeping, going to the bathroom and eating a little through a damn tube.

“Are you okay?” he asks, sitting back on his heels, his calloused hand stroking my cheek.

I try to smile.

“Your eyes always give you away.”

“I love you,” I tell him.

“I love you too,” he says before he takes my cheeks between his big hands and softly kisses my lips, then my temples, my jaw and both corners of my mouth. Loving every single broken part of me.

Hunter

“Come on. I’ll carry you,” I whisper, kissing her forehead, adjusting the oxygen tube in her nose, I drape the straps of her tank over my head, the metal pressing against my side. Holding her in my arms, I slowly take each step one at a time, descending the stairs. Her arms feel brittle around my neck. She nuzzles my earlobe and rests her cheek on my shoulder.

“Babe, stop it.” I grin when my dick twitches. Fuck, I can’t be sporting a hard-on right now, holding her tight as I walk outside.

Jay keeps the door open for me. Careful not to hurt her, I place her in the front seat of the truck, the oxygen tank next to her on the floor. I caress her forehead.

“Shorty, you feel a little hot,” I murmur, and she looks so pale.

“Not in front of Jay,” she jokes, her voice barely a whisper, and coming out ever so slowly as she stares at her father. We smile at each other, and Jay slaps me on the back. I close the door and walk with him to the other truck.

“Should we stay home?” I sigh, leaning against the truck, shoving my hands in the pockets of my jeans.

He shakes his head, pulling on the lashing straps, checking if the boards are tightly fastened on the roof of his car.

“I don’t know. She stays in bed all the time. Maybe a little fresh air will do her good,” he mutters, turning to Marian for support, who smiles.

“She should be okay,” she responds.

“All right, we will both keep an eye on her,” I promise him. I get in the driver’s seat and open the windows, hoping the fresh air will bring a little color to her cheeks.

I watch her from the corner of my eyes while we cruise along the highway to the beach. Her long hair sways in the breeze.

We’re not going to have years of this.

No more drives to the beach. And they’re just one thing on a list of many I would like us to do together. She lays her hand on my knee. Shaking my head I kiss her fist. We grin at each other. Sometimes you don’t have to say anything. A smile is enough.

Pulling into the parking lot, I stare at the beach, and my mouth drops. “What the hell is this?”

She turns to follow my gaze and smiles. All my friends from racing and surfing are here. There’s a barbeque and a bonfire. Jay gets out of his car and my father steps up and slaps him on the back, Oliver’s new wife by his side. A blonde surfer babe in her forties. I know by the way he looks at her and the way she kisses his cheek that they’re in this for life, and it fucking hurts knowing I’m never going to have that with Sky.

“What is this, Hunter?” Sky asks in slow motion, pulling me from my thoughts. Her voice sounds nothing like it did before, and I hate this fucking disease, the way it’s slowly breaking down the woman I love.

I shrug, grinning at her. I need to stay strong. “I don’t know,” I say, turning the ignition off. Drew opens the door and rock music fills the car.
