I turn around, and sit next to her on the bed, and bury my face in my palms trying to hide my tears.

“Okay,” she whispers. She lays her head against my shoulder and kisses my neck.

Sky

His whole body is shaking. I run my knuckles over his cheekbone with my trembling fist. “I’m sorry,” I tell him. His hands caress my face, and he rests his forehead against mine.

Closing his eyes, he says, “I’m so sorry,” his hot breath mingling with mine when he kisses the corner of my mouth.

I have trouble sitting but I bite through the pain, through the exhaustion I’m already experiencing. I lose my balance and he catches me.

I wanted him to leave so he wouldn’t be with me as I fell apart. I didn’t want the last memories of him and me to be like this. For him to not see me as the person I was when I met him. The person he deserves. But now I know he takes me as I am. Broken, but so incredibly loved.

“You thought you could push me away but here I am. And I’m not fucking leaving you again,” he declares, a slow grin stealing across his face.

“Why?”

“No, babe, let me say this before I lose it. Does my love have to make sense for it to be real? You may not know this but when you love someone, truly love someone, you let them in on the good, the bad and the ugly.” I smile but he’s serious. “I love you now until forever, cross my fucking heart.”

“You do?” I ask, my voice hoarse.

“Because you are still you. Don’t you know I would give my life for you? I fell in love with your soul, not your body. Nothing lasts forever but give me this—our perfect fucking forever.”

I shake my head, wanting to believe him. “Fuck forever,” I whisper.

“The feeling of never being good enough—you changed that. You changed me. You love me for who I am. You know me. Every light, every shade, and still you want…”

I close my eyes. “Look at me,” he orders. I shake my head. “Babe, please?”

He drops his face so we are at eye level. I gaze into his eyes, and they are blazing. “This is it, honey. Okay?” he asks, his deep voice cracking.

“Okay,” I tell him, nodding. “But there will come a time when…”

“I know,” he says, strained, and takes me into his arms. “I will be right there beside you when it happens.”

“This isn’t a mistake, is it?” I whisper, my mouth moving across his parted lips.

He smiles. “Babe, every mistake I ever made led me to you.” Gently, he lays me down, getting in right beside me.

Licking my lips, I tell him, “You know it hurts to even speak.” I clear my throat. “Sometimes when I open my mouth I can’t.”

“Jay told me,” he says, wiping away my tears with his thumb.

“That is why I asked Tim—because I couldn’t see the track anymore. I wanted to reach the finish line,” I state.

“You will when you’re ready,” he says, kissing my temple. I snuggle into him, resting my head against his chest.

“You know I came here looking for my past.” I smile, tracing his jawline, his lips, his earth-shattering smile.

“Have you found what you were looking for?”

Pressing my lips to his, I whisper, “I found something better. I found you.”
