During the drive, I try to focus on the road ahead, but instead I keep staring at him. My mind wandering back to our moment in the truck. I lost my mind, but damn it was the best sex I ever had in my life. I stare at his hard thighs, the way the muscles in his arms flex, and how the long strands of his hair fall in front of his eyes. I know he keeps a lot of stories close to his chest, but who am I to judge when I’m the one who’s not only been lying to myself, but to everyone around me as well?

Hunter keeps stealing glances at me probably thinking I’m not paying attention. I watch him, memorizing the way his tattooed hand shifts gears. My cheeks flare, imagining what more those hands could do to me. What’s wrong with having a little fun?

I love the way he talks about his life with Jay. I know he’ll walk away in the end. I shouldn’t let him in, not now. What is the point anyway? We had fun, but that’s it. We could never become something more.

I scoot to the side of the seat and stare out the window, not saying anything as I focus on the changing scenery.

Hunter parks the car in front of the garage. Tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, he says, “We’re back.”

My heart rate picks up, and my palms start to sweat. But I don’t want to think about it, about us. Because I’m afraid where giving him my heart could lead. “Thank you for a lovely dinner,” I tell him, handing him May’s pie before opening the car door.

“Sky? Are we good with what happened before?”

I nod, and he follows me to the front of the house.

“It was fucking amazing.” His deep voice low. Putting his left hand in his pocket, he shyly says, “and I like talking to you.” He is quiet for a moment, staring at the box containing the pie. “When you’re ready, you can tell me about the drugs.”

He hands me back the plastic box.

Wow. I didn’t see that one coming. I’m not going to go there with him. I want to enjoy what we have a little longer before it gets complicated.

I take a step back, opening the front door. “See you later, Hunter,” turning my back I take a step inside the house, leaving him standing on the porch. I lean against the doorjamb and watch him walk away, pulling his hoodie over his head. Glancing over his shoulder, he stops to light a cigarette.

I slowly head for the stairs holding onto the wall for dear life, my muscles cramping with each step I take.

Jay peeks out from the kitchen. “Did you have a good time with Hunter, Skylar?”

I cringe, leaning against the wall. Trying to focus on my breathing, I hope the dizziness will subside.

“Yes,” I say slowly. “Goodnight, Jay.”

“Sleep tight, baby. Wait, hold up. I got you something,” he says, opening a drawer from the closet in the hallway. He hands me a couple of envelopes and pieces of paper. “I thought maybe you would like to write some things down,” he says, sounding insecure. “I have trouble finding the right words to say sometimes, and I thought you might have the same problem.”

I put my arms around his waist, taking myself by surprise. “Thanks, Dad.”

He kisses my hair and hugs me tight to his chest, before letting go.

“Want to hang out with me before you crash? I can make hot cocoa,” he says, his voice hopeful.

“Only if we share the last of this pie?” I ask, holding the box in the air.

“Hell yeah, make yourself comfortable, I’ll be right back with the drinks.”

I walk over to his extensive record collection that fills the better part of the wall next to the fireplace.

“Want to put on a record?” he asks, setting two cups on the coffee table.

“I like that you have this one,” I say, pulling a Frank Ocean record out. He takes it from me and cleans it before putting it on. The first chords echo throughout the living room, as I take my seat next to him on the comfy rug.

“Where did you two go tonight?” he asks, trying very hard to hide the curiosity in his voice.

“We went to a diner,” I tell him taking a small sip, I grab a fork and dig into the pie.

“May and Clay’s place?” he asks, after he takes a bite himself.

“Yeah, how did you know?”
